A special thanks to my friend
Ieda, in Sao Paulo, Brasil, for sending me the above images ! These are the paperback
cover designs, published in 1960, of the work by Georg Ebers (1837 - 1898). ( Ebers's
work, Egypt : Descriptive, Historical, and Picturesque, was published in
1878, and translated into English from the original German. )
Scenes from the 1963 blockbuster
Gabriel Pascal started filming Caesar and Cleopatra on June 12th ,1944, and by
the beginning of February, 1945, Vivien Leigh's part in the picture was finished, and all
the essential interior scenes were complete. Scenes in the picture which were actually
taken in Egypt include long shots around the Sphinx, the Roman legions marching through
the desert, shots of Alexandria harbour and the Pharos lighthouse, and Caesar's homeward
bound gallery setting sail across the Mediterranean. There is also a very beautiful shot,
leading into the battle scenes, of Roman troops marching alongside a rose tinted lake,
suggesting the reflection of a sky at sunrise. This is the salt lake of Edku, some 85
miles from Alexandria, and its water is actually tinged with pink, due to a mysterious
combination of certain chemicals with the salt deposits.
