Take one 3-door Renault Clio, add some discreet styling kit, tweak about with
the underpinnings, add some aluminium to the cabin and for the final piece of
the jigsaw drop a 2.0 litre 16v engine into the engine bay - and hey presto! One
Renault Clio Sport 172. The 172 standing for horsepower, to make it the most
powerful front wheel drive ‘hot hatch’ around.
Renault launched the high specification Clio 172 in Spring 2000, backed by an
original advertising campaign - "Remove aggression before driving". By
the end of 2000, the word was spreading that the 172 was more than just a
hatchback in sports trim. It was in fact, one of the most exciting of all hot
hatches, with a power and handling that made performance almost brutal.
The Clio Sport 172 is one of the latest editions to the Clio brand. This excluding the V6 is the most powerful and fastest
Clio to date.
The little Clio 172 is a high performance car. With a two litre engine and
variable valve timing tricks, a loony amount of power is available offering
quite startling acceleration. Big brakes on chunky wheels, a tuned chassis and up rated
suspension make for a challenging but thrilling drive.
Performance:-
- 0-100 kph / 0-62 mph: 6.8 secs
- Maximum speed: 138 mph / 220 kph
