The 110bhp Clio RSI's looks and specification seem conclusively to point to a
no-holds-barred sporting hatchback. Its pruce and running cost, however, are
suggestive of cars with more modest horizons. So, is this a performance car or
an economy car? Lets just say the RSi offers its own inimitable blend of power
and practicality. Compare the RSi's equipment levels, design and on-road
capabilities with other cars around the same price and you'll be force to
conclude that, while it may have rivals, it has no equals.
Unfortunately, due to rising insurance premiums of 'Hot-hatches' in the UK,
Renault discontinued the 16 Valve model. In order to 'fool' the insurance
companies, they replaced it with the luke-warm RSi which has a smaller 1.8
(110bhp) engine. Unfortunately, it's performance is not in the same league as
the 16v, although is by no means slow. That said, the RSi has the same wonderful
handling characteristics that the Clio is renowned for, as well as decent
performance. Similar to the RT in looks, the RSi is identified by very smart
'Monaco' 5-spoke alloy wheels on low-profile tyres, side skirts, tailgate
spoiler and front fog-lamps and was available as a 3 door bodystyle only.
