The Clio's chassis and running gear is evolved from the R5, with the engines
gaining power, catalytic converters, and fuel injection. All the engines used in
the Clios are of 4-cylinder in-line type, having (depending on model) either a
single overhead camshaft with 8 valves, or a twin-cam head with 16 valves. The
engine is mounted transversely in the engine bay, driving the front wheels.
The car is available as a 3 or 5 door hatchback, or 3 door panel van. The
model range caters for a wide market, and comprises of the RL, RN, RT, S, 16
Valve, and Baccara, with most being generously equipped throughout the model
range. As would be the fashion with all the Clio ranges, there were also many
special edition models (not covered here).
Styling cues that make the Clio stand out is the slightly hump-backed
styling, with a 'wheel at each corner' chassis - which is one of the aspects
that makes the car handle and ride so well. The car also has a chunky rear wiper
arm which is unique, and small, shaped door mirrors. The bonnet (US: Hood) wraps
over the top of the front wings, and with small headlights, gives the car a
sporty stance.
