The complete appearance of this car is made distinctive by 'Its unusual bumpers, or what Renault call shields, in the latest idiom. These are made from pre-impregnated glass-reinforced plastic
mouldings and it is claimed that there will be no appreciable deformation even in an Impact of up to 5 mph. Because of the quite high performance, disc brakes are used at the front and drums at the rear, and there 'Is the usual limiting valve. It will please many potential purchasers to know that the handbrake 'Is a "proper" one.
Although reclining front seats are fitted, they are not quite as luxurious as those used on the Renault
6 -1 100, although anatomically good, and pleasant in appearance. I have never had much cause to modify my initial reactions to the Renault 5. I would write very much the same about my R5
GTS, which I have, although it has over 106,000 miles with me and now it's
on 120,000 Miles with the new owner on the odometer. It has served me well beyond the call of duty. I never had any preferential treatment from Renault as regards servicing or anything
else. The R5 cost £930 when introduced in the UK and they now costs about £1,000
- 5000, although they have been improved in many ways. The Renault 5 went on to be a best seller for the
French, and it still is. Various variants have been
introduced the 1.4 litre TS, the 1.4 GTL, the 5-speed 1.7 GTX, the 5 Automatic and the Gordini (5 Alpine
in France). The 'ultimate' 5 is the Turbo, a limited production saloon
racer, there is a Gordini Turbo series car too.
