This is really a remake of the Renault 5 Turbo: Take the
smallest possible hatchback, throw away the rear seat and replace it with
a powerful engine driving the rear wheels. This makes an ideal car for the
single-marque races organized by Renault as curtain raisers before major
racing events. The mid-engine car is a 2-seater, easily recognizable by
its lower stance and significantly greater width. It also has large
lateral air intakes, 17-in. multispoke light alloy wheels and striking
rocker panel trim. The interior is well-finished with some extra sporting
touches such as perforated aluminum pedals that are perfectly arranged for
heel-and-toeing. The Clio Sport V-6, which comes equipped with air
conditioning and a sophisticated CD/radio system, is not light. At 2940
lb. it is 386 lb. heavier than the front-drive 2.0-liter 172-bhp Sport
Clio 16V. Those who expect Porsche 911 performance at half the price will
be disappointed. But with a maximum speed of 153 mph, 14 seconds for the
quarter mile and 26 seconds for the standing kilometer, it is certainly fun
to drive. It also responds well to lifting the accelerator pedal when
cornering hard.
