AS Product design

Portfolio of design

The portfolio needs to address 5 main areas. Evidence is required for all these areas. A portfolio approach which requires students to consider several smaller projects is how we will hit these areas.

The areas are;

1    Investigation and clarification of the problem

2    DEVELOPMENT OF A DESIGN PROPOSAL

3    COMMUNICATION AND MODELLING

4    Making and Manufacturing

5    EVALUATION AND TESTING.

Project 3

Brief
Candle Holder

6 lessons

There is a need to design a table top candle holder.

The design will reflect the style of  designer PHILLIPPE STARCK.

It is intended to make the final design from metal.

The design is for a single nightlight type candle.

It must be unusual, original and functional – that is, it must illuminate a table. Although only one is to be made the assumption is that several could be used as needed to accommodate larger tables.

Students should aim to make a quality product which both reflects the designs of PHILLIPPE STARCK and which could be sold as a commercial product.

Additional information

Consider using Aluminium, copper, sheet steel, thin steel rod etc.

Think about joining methods, welding, brazing, riveting, adhesives.

Produce a portfolio which includes the following pages.

RESEARCH into typical STARCK artefacts, illustrations, comments 3 pages.

INVESTIGATION – detail the nightlight – produce accurate drawing,

test one for length of burning. 1page.

DEVELOP some designs. Rough drawings, mock ups in card.

Students should consider ProDesktop CAD to produce good, accurate final designs.

This minor project will impact sections 2, 3, 4 and 5
