Welwyn Garden City
Ebenezer Howard's vision of a Garden City was one that would combine the benefits of living in a town with those of living in the country. It would be a place in which people would both live and work in beautiful surroundings; in a city that would be not only a "city in a garden", but a "city of gardens" and an example of good civic design and architectural harmony.
- Welwyn Garden City Society
The Welwyn Garden City Society fully supports all the above ideals, even though the town has now outgrown itself, and many residents commute to London and elsewhere. These and other social changes, such as the car becoming the main means of transport and the growth of supermarkets, chain stores and multi-national industrial conglomerates, means that Ebenezer Howard's original vision has already given way to the demands of modern living. It is therefore even more important that we help improve what we feel is wrong and safeguard what we have and value.- With the help of our members we aim to represent local public opinion (non-politically), as well as preserve and conserve the environment and local heritage, ultimately striving to create a 'modern-day Garden City'.

- Heritage Open Days
- In 1999 the Society organised its first WGC Heritage Open Days and attracted over 3500 visits to various places of historical and social interest. These included 3 private houses, 4 churches, a theatre, an arts workshop, a school and 3 offices. Some were so popular that local organisation was stretched to the limit! There were 6 guided walks led mostly my members of the Society, with starts throughout the two days. An exhibition of plans of successful and unsuccessful projects was presented in the Council Houses, which, if all were successful would have left the garden city a very different place. We also had a sign unveiled marking the original site of the 1922 Ideal Home Model Village.
- This year the open days are being held on Saturday and Sunday, 16th and 17th September.
- We will have stands in both the Howard Centre, very close to the railway station, and in Campus West, from there a minibus will ferry people to and from the starts of the guided walks. We have many properties exhibiting again this year with several new ones, and the number is still rising.
- We are minutes off the A1M by car, and less than 30 minutes from London and Cambridge by train. See map of WGC.
