Details of Consultation ProcessTo begin with there will be a wide ranging discussion of health issues, life style habits, levels of exercise and rest, stress profiles and diet, and so on. It is often important to discover those things which are most important to the patient, - life long ambitions, heartfelt beliefs, etc., - and to see if these have been thwarted in life. Many illnesses or "dis-eases" result from this and it is important to resolve these issues wherever possible. Such considerations often relate to the constitutional type of the patient. These are five of these types, which are based upon genetic make-up. Identifying ones type can go a long way towards helping to understand existing imbalances and how they may be resolved. Although this will give a good general idea of the needs of the patient, the next step is a holistic analysis. The exact nature of this will depend upon the outcome of the initial discussion. It will typically consist of pulse analysis, tongue examination, iridology and if appropriate, food sensitivity tests. A determination of meridial sensitivity may also be required. These procedures will then show the nature of the imbalance and enable a diagnosis to be made. A treatment programme can them be organised to help not only the presenting symptoms, but more importantly, redress the underlying imbalance. This is the holistic approach. Treatment protocols will of course depend upon the diagnosis, but will normally include a herbal medicine, dietary advice and recommendation on life-style. Constitutional medicines may also be given. Desensitization is also sometimes required and here potentized herbs or even allergens may be used. The number of consultations required will depend upon the condition, but usually 1 - 5 appointments are needed, 2 being the average. After this, reviews of 15 minutes will replace the full consultation. Periodic reviews every 2 - 8 weeks will enable progress to be charted and any changes to prescriptions etc, to be made. Once recovery has been achieved then medication is slowly withdrawn, over about 4 - 8 weeks, and treatment will then be complete. The duration of treatment will depend on the complexity of each case, but a very general rule of thumb is 1 months treatment for 1 year of illness.
