PMS
PMS is a hormonal imbalance which causes women much distress. It is
accompanied by various symptoms, including menstrual pain, bloating, irritability and
depression.
The herb most frequently used for this problem is vitex agnus castus.
It is often combined with other herbs, depending on the actual symptoms which are present.
Common additions are valerian and skullcap for anxiety, hypericum for
depression, dandelion herb and Juniper for bloating and blue cohosh for menstrual pain.
Most herbalists will also include a liver tonic for detoxification such
as dandelion root or bupleurium. These are believed to reduce the overall unpleasant
symptoms of PMS.
A basic mixture might therefore contain vitex agnus castus and
dandelion. A potency of magnesium can also be added. This is a very important mineral
which is involved in stabilizing blood sugar and also help maintain proper hormonal
balance.
As indicated above, other herbs may be added or taken separately to
help tackle specific problems.
