Respiratory
Problems - Sinusitis, Catarrh & Bronchitis
These conditions normally arise after an infection or allergy occurs which has not been
properly cleared from the body. A residual inflammation and mucous layer persists in the
respiratory membranes which may develop into a chronic condition.
The single most important element in helping with these problems is the diet,
especially in chronic cases. Mucous forming foods such as dairy products should be avoided
and the diet needs to be rich in vegetables, salads, bean shoots and fruit. Garlic and
onions are also used, although caution is recommended if one has a sensitive stomach.
Stress can often be a problem and impede or even prevent recovery. Relaxation exercises
and meditation can help here.
Fresh air and exercise are also a good idea, although these will need to be moderated
according to one's state of health and fitness. Start very gently, and increase exercise
levels very gradually.
Herbs can of course help. Teas made from thyme, eucalyptus, mint, and golden rod are
both antiseptic and cleansing, and are quite pleasant to drink, especially with a drop of
honey!
I use a combination of elderberries, liquorice, thyme, mullein and honey. This is a
general cleansing mixture which also contains natural antioxidants, vitamins, and
biochemically active minerals, such as Kali. Mur. and Kali. Sulph. These minerals are used
in biochemics and are believed to help the body's restorative processes.
In chronic cases of bronchitis, herbalists have used elecampagne extract. This has a
very long tradition of use in many countries throughout the world. It is normally taken
for 3 or 4 months continually as a liquid extract, although some prefer just to chew small
pieces of the root at regular intervals.
If in doubt, it is always best to consult a professional herbalist who will recommend
the best herbs to take.
