Skin Problems

Most skin problems are caused by internal imbalances of the immune system, endocrine system, liver, kidneys, lymph or other metabolic disturbances. These may be linked in turn to stress, faulty diet, infections or genetic tendencies.

Alteratives

The class of herbs traditionally used for skin problems are the alteratives, also known as "blood purifiers". These can be considered as metabolic correctives and as such have a very wide range of action. Such herbs have been used to treat acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and urticaria.

A general corrective formula used as an internal treatment for skin problems contains echinacea, iris root, burdock root, red clover flower, sarsparilla and dandelion herb, and is called "Alterative Compound".

External Treatments

External treatments can also be used, provided that they are only mild herbal creams, to give relief while the alterative compound is taking effect.

Herbs will normally have to be taken for 3 or 4 months to be effective, but of course this does depend upon the severity of individual cases.

A general supplement of mixed oils is also usually required, especially if the skin is dry. A mixture of sesame, evening primrose and vitamin E oils are recommended.

Case Study

John, a 35 year old printer, had psoriasis for 12 years. IT covered his arms, legs, back and chest and caused severe itching. The condition seemed to be getting worse, and he was under much stress at work.

After a consultation and examination I prescribed Alterative Compound and Graperoot Cream. These he used for 3 months and gradually the itching reduced and the psoritic lesions began to clear. However no further improvement occurred in the next 6 weeks, so Scutel Tablets were added to his prescription. Nine months after beginning his treatment John is now clear of Psoriasis and only takes 2 Scutel tablets a day as a preventative measure.
