A Place in the Sun

Given the nature of the current punk-rock revival, I half-expected this to be another average punk album, but the single My Own Worst Enemy is fantastic. You HAVE heard it, it's the one that's played far too often on Radio 1.

Well I was almost right - it's half average, half superb! It's essentially the same guitar sound all the way through, but it's re-produced in different ways. For instance, Perfect One has the same sound as all the other songs, but it's really a ballard. It starts off Cast style, and breaks into heavy guitars Supergrass style.

It's not just your average rebellion/anarchist/'b****cks to all' punk album either. Clever lyrics like those in Miserable provide for a thought-provoking album as well as some tongue-in-cheek witicism:

"You make me come, you make me complete, you make me completely miserable..."

No Big Thing is punk at it's best. With a fast, predominant drum beat and heavy guitars (again) Lit this time throw in a few fancy solos and serve up a middle-of-the-road song, which is quite nice at this point in the album.

Quicksand and The Best is Yet to Come Undone offer similar servings to No Big Thing, which is why it is easy to get tired quickly of this album.

Lit are destined for a few more top 20 hits yet. The biggest test will come with their third album when we will find out if they really are capable of doing anything completely original. In the meantime however, this will do just nicely thank you very much.
