(1835 - 1924)
[Referred to as Dafydd Williams by Lady Llanofer. He was her under-agent in the 1880s.]
David Williams was born in Aberystwyth, about 1835. He was my great-grandfather, known in our family as 'Dadcu' [grandfather], and known in Llanofer as Mr Dafydd Williams.
His parents were David Williams, a mason, born in Llanbadarnfawr, Aberystwyth about 1793, and Margaret, born in Llanfair, Merionethshire, about 1801.

According to the 1851 census, the family were then living in Vulcan Place, Llanbadarn-fawr. Athough he was only 16 years old, David's occupation was given as 'Cabinet Maker'.
At that time, there were two other children - John, born in Aberystwyth, about 1838, and Ann, born in Aberystwyth about 1840.
[I know nothing of John and Ann, nor of any other siblings. If anyone reading this has information about this family, I would be glad to know of it. I am especially searching for a boy named Harold, surname unknown, born about 1900, but almost certainly a descendant of this family.]
In the 1851 census, Dafydd's occupation, at the age of 16, was 'cabinet maker', but on his marriage certificates, he is a 'joiner'.
In December 1857 he married Elizabeth Richards, at the Parish Church, Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire.
She was born about 1835, the daughter of David Richards, a joiner.
They had a daughter, Margaret Jane, born at Vulcan Place, Aberystwyth, on 20th March 1862.
On the 5th April 1862, Elizabeth, aged 27, died of 'Palsy'; their address was Penmaesglas, Aberystwith.
Dafydd married again on December 5th 1865. His second wife was Mary Morgans, aged 26, the daughter of Evan Morgan, a labourer. The marriage took place at the Parish church, Aberystwyth. Mary was born about 1840, in Llanychaearn.
According to a family story, Dafydd, a well educated man, would stand in the town square reading the newspaper aloud for the benefit of those who could not read.
At the time of the 1871 census, Dafydd and Mary Williams were living at 10 Vulcan Place, Aberystwyth.
Their children were Margaret Jane (1st wife Elizabeth's daughter) aged 9; John aged 4; Evan aged 3; and Elizabeth Ann, aged 1.
Dafydd's occupation is given as Building Surveyor.
In 1881 they were living at 10 Vulcan Street, with four more children - James aged 6; George aged 4; Mary Anna aged 2; and William aged 4 months.
[I presume that some time between 1871 and 1881 Vulcan Place was renamed Vulcan Street.]

By the time the 1891 census was taken, Dafydd and his family were living in Cardiff. The children living at home were Elizabeth aged 21; James aged 16; William aged 10; Griffith aged 8; and Eos Mwynwen aged 6.
All the children of Dafydd and Mary Williams, except Eos Mwynwen, were born in Aberystwyth. Eos Mwynwen was born in Goytre, Monmouthshire, and family ledgend says she was given her very Welsh name by Lady Llanofer herself!
