| Short/tall, usually hairless; little branched, stems spineless. Leaves long and thin, wavy-edged and spiny, sometimes cottony beneath. Flowerheads lilac, 15-25mm, fragrant, in clusters; bracts purplish, scarcely spiny; June-September. Very common in grassy areas: look for pale, smallish flowers and spineless stems.
