Hillingdon Sailing Club is one of several clubs whose members enjoy the use of the 45 acre lake in the Colne Valley Regional Park which is managed by the Hillingdon Outdoor Activities Centre (HOAC).
HSC is a one-class club for owners of the International Mirror Class Dinghy, but members have the use of all the excellent HOAC facilities including training courses, boat parking and boat hire. For information about HOAC click here.
HOAC is at the end of Dews Lane, which runs westwards from Harvil Road, about 3/4 mile south of the junction with Moorhall Road, as shown on the sketch map. To see an aerial photo, click here. The rural environment is beautiful. With a wind from the north, we get a clear wind over the whole lake - with other winds about two thirds of the lake is clear and there are interesting eddies elsewhere.
HSC organises friendly but keen racing for Mirror Dinghies each weekend throughout the year, except at Christmas when the Activities Centre is closed. Most members sail single-handed, although the Mirror was intended as a family craft for an adult and a young crew. She is a very interesting boat to sail single-handed, responding well to careful adjustment of the several "bits of string" which are all within easy reach. We welcome members of all ages.
Racing alternates between Saturday afternoon, starting at 2.30, and Sunday morning at 11.00. In 2008, Saturday races will be even numbers of weeks from 5 January, and Sunday races will be even numbers of weeks from 13 January. (Dates shown below in the Race Officer lists) At times which vary according to the season, sailing is allowed at other times of the week.
We hold two or three social gatherings during each year, and members sometimes go off together to sail on coastal waters.
The club charges a small annual subscription, plus a £2 fee per race for prizes and public liability insurance. HOAC also charges for membership and boat parking.
The Mirror Class Association safeguards the one-design status of the Mirror Dinghy and runs national and regional championships. Its website is at www.ukmirrorsailing.com
