Built in 1656, the Cannons was home to the monks (of Merton Priory, after their arrival from Normandy. Today it houses Merton's Heritage Centre.

Merton Priory was founded in the 12th century and in its time became an important centre.... Kings and queens were crowned there, some were buried there, others were frequent visitors. Parliament once assembled there and eventually the Priory became rich and corrupt. It finally fell victim to the Dissolution of the Monasteries and was pulled down.
