Laughing Writing Surfing Thinking Hoping |
After some awful events in the news I thought that it would be nice to look
around for those things in the world that aren't completely horrible in an
attempt to restore some of the faith that I'd lost in humanity. The links here
are pretty thin at the moment, but I hope to feed them up for Christmas. I also
wish that there was as much stuff like this as there was bad stuff that
inspired me to write this.
If you've seen the film 'Patch Adams' you'll probably have already been to the Patch Adams web site . If you haven't seen the film then I suggest you watch it. It is about a medical student who believes that doctors should not be so detatched from their patients and most importantly that they should use humour wherever possible to help their patients cope with whatever ails them. The story is all the more heartwarming for being true, so nip on over to the Patch Adams site and find out all about the Gesundheit Institute. Staying with the medical theme: meet Dr Beat Richner . This guy used to work in Cambodia before the Khmer Rouge took over the country and started slaughtering the population. After these barbarians were defeated Richner returned and was asked to help in the rebuilding of the country's hospitals. What's cool about this blokey is he goes out and plays Bach cello concertos to raise money for this cause and he has helped build two hospitals already. When I first started using the Internet I was fortunate enough to become aware of Project Gutenburg . This is a project to transcribe out of copyright books and make them available at no charge for people to download and read. With all the wrangling that is occuring about copyright (you'll be pleased to note that there is also a copyleft for completeness) this is a Good Thing. So whizz off over there and check out the completely huge list of great works of literature that are available. If you have any ideas for stuff I could include here mail me , ta.
