Case-Based Reasoning

I was a Research Associate in the department of Computer Science, University of Wales Aberystwyth (where I'd studied for my degree) between 1992-1999. One of my research interests was Case-Based Reasoning, which is a branch of Artificial Intelligence. This work was the basis for my M.Phil.

The concept of Case-Based Reasoning is based on the analogy of the ability of humans to find solutions to problems by adapting old solutions to apply them to new situations. A simple example might be taking a cooking-recipe which contains meat and substituting some of the ingredients to turn it into a vegetarian recipe.

I wrote a general purpose tool for doing CBR called CASPIAN (an acronym of "CASe Parser by IAN"). From Caspian a new application was developed called Wayland which is used in Aluminium die-casting to find suitable machine-parameters for setting up pressure die-casting machines.

I co-authored a number of papers with Professor C. J. Price on the subject of Case-Based Reasoning and related topics. I was also the principal Research Associate on the QPAC project.

Some of this software of mine is available from the University for free.
