In future the Under 21 European Championships finals will now be held in odd years rather then even years starting with Holland in June 2007. The reigning champions are the hosts, Holland who won the Championships in 2006.

After missing out in 2006, England have qualified for the Under 21 European Championship 2007 finals under the management of Peter Taylor as they won their play off matches against Germany. England's results in the two qualification games were:

The final U21 qualification table was:

England U21 topped the group and therefore had to play off against Germany U21 for a place in the finals. The results were:

England 1 Germany 0 - held at Ricoh Arena, Coventry on 6 October 2006
Germany 0  England 2 - held at Leverkusen, Germany on 10 October 2006

The England Under 21 team won 3-0 on aggregate with a goal from 25 yards from Leighton Baines at home and two late break away goals from substitute Theo Walcott away in Germany.

The England team that won 1-0 at home to Germany was Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Leighton Baines, Steven Taylor, Anton Ferdinand, James Milner, Tom Huddlestone, Nigel Reo-Coker, Wayne Routledge (Gabriel Abbonlahor 71), David Nugent (Ben Watson 81), Theo Walcott (Ashley Young 66)

The England team that beat Germany 2-0 away was Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Leighton Baines, Steven Taylor, Anton Ferdinand, James Milner, Tom Huddlestone, Nigel Reo-Coker, Ashley Young (Cameron Jerome 90), David Nugent (Justin Hoyte 66), Gabriel Abbonlahor (Theo Walcott 76)

The 2007 finalists are England, Holland, Serbia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Belgium, Israel and Italy. The winners and runners up of each group progress to the semi-finals to be held on 20 June 2007. The final will be at Groningen, Holland on Saturday 23 June 2007.

On 6 February 2007 ex England left back Stuart Pearce took charge of the England U21 team following Peter Taylor's resignation (to concentrate on managing Crystal Palace) and England U21 drew 2-2 with Spain U21 in a friendly match with goals from David Nugent and Leroy Lita. England U 21 then went on to draw 3-3 against Italy on 24 Mar 2007 and beat Slovakia 5-0 on 5 June 2007 in warm up games for the tournament.

David Bentley (Blackburn) withdrew from the squad after it was picked through fatigue. Micah Richards (Man City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal) and Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) miss out through injury.

On 11 June 2007, England U21 drew 0-0 against the Czech Republic U21 team in their first game of the finals. The Czech's had slightly the better of the game but after 87 minutes, England U21 had a penalty after David Nugent's chip was handled by a Czech defender, Hubnik. Leroy Lita took the penalty but put his shot wide of the goalkeepers right hand post as he dived to his left.

On 14 June 2007, England U21 led Italy U21 2-0 through a header from David Nugent after 25 minutes and a goal from Leroy Lita a couple of minutes later but ended up with a 2-2 draw after Chiellini and Aquilani scored either side of half time to level the match. Lita also missed a very easy chance early on in this game when he fired just wide in front of an open goal.

On 17 June 2007, England U21 got the victory against Serbia U21 required to qualify for the semi-finals. Having already qualified for the semi finals Serbia made 9 changes to their team but were still very competitive. Leroy Lita scored after only 5 minutes but it was the second goal by substitute Matt Derbyshire after 76 minutes that sparked controversy - Kieron Richardson passed to him while Serbia's Rajkovic was down injured and Deryshire's resulting goal brought angry complaints from the opposing Serbian team. After the game UEFA investigated Serbia for their fans racist chants, their players behaviour during and after the game and the England's players conduct after the game.

The England Under 21 team against Serbia was Carson, Hoyte, Onuoha, Taylor, Baines, Milner,  Reo-Coker (capt, Huddlestone 87 sent off 90),  Noble, Richardson (Routledge 82), Nugent, Lita (Derbyshire 69)

On Wednesday 20 June 2007 England lost 13-12 on penalties after drawing 1-1 at the end of extra time against Holland in the semi-finals of "Euro 2007". Leroy Lita scored England's goal after 39 minutes with a powerful shot to the near post that the Dutch goalkeeper could only get a hand to. Lita hit the bar at the start of the second half but the Dutch looked the more dangerous team and England were hanging on for much of the second half. With a minute left and centre back Steven Taylor down injured, Maceo Rigters equalised with an overhead kick from close range. England held on in extra time and in the penalty shootout Young, Babbel and Milner scored, Drenthe hit the post, Noble and Janssen scored and then Hoyte had his penalty saved. Beerens, Derbyshire and Maduro scored to make it 4-4 on penalties after 5 penalty kicks each. Ferdinand, De Ridder, Carson, Zuiverloon, Rosenior and Rigters scored before Reo-Coker had his shot saved and then Kruiswijk missed (7-7). Taylor, Waterman, Young, Beerens, Milner, Drenthe, Noble, Maduro, Hoyte and Janssen scored (12-12). Then Derbyshire and De Ridder had their shots saved before Anton Ferdinand hit the crossbar. Gianni Zuiverloon (Holland) scored the deciding penalty to give Holland a 13-12 win on penalties and a place in the final.

The England Under 21 team against Holland was Carson, Hoyte, Onuoha (left field with groin injury 105), Taylor, Baines (Rosenior 46), Milner,  Reo-Coker (capt),  Noble, Young, Nugent (Derbyshire 78), Lita (A Ferdinand 87)

 

England also qualified for the Under 21 2002 finals and have also won this tournament twice (in 1982 and 1984).

Holland retained the Under 21 European Championships trophy they won last year. Serbia had had a good championships but after Kolarov was dismissed after 62 minutes they never looked like winning the game. Holland finished the game as 4-1 winners in Groningen, Holland.
