England qualified for the Under 21 European Championships 2009 after only dropping two points and letting in one goal from their group (a 1-1 draw away in Portugal U21). After winning their group they had a play off against Wales U21 for a place in the finals.

Steven Taylor, David Wheater, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon and Danny Welbeck were not available for selection in England's Under 21 squad through injury.

The England team in the 2-1 win against Finland was Hart, Cranie, Richards (Tomkins 88), Mancienne, Gibbs, Muamba, Walcott (Campbell 46), Cattermole, Noble, Milner, Agbonlahor (Rodwell 86)

Lee Cattermole side footed in the first goal after 15 minutes after Gabriel Agbonlahor cut inside his marker down the left wing and cut the ball back to him. But after 33 minutes Michael Mancienne was sent off for holding back Sadik in the penalty box and Sparv equalised from the resulting penalty. Right back Martin Cranie then went to centre back with James Milner filling in at right back. Theo Walcott was being well marked and was replaced with Frasier Campbell at half time. Micah Richards headed in the winner on 53 minutes from Milner's corner kick.

The England team in the 2-0 win against Spain was Hart, Cranie, Richards, Onuoha, Gibbs, Muamba, Cattermole, Noble, Milner (Gardner 84), Johnson (Walcott 62), Agbonlahor (Campbell 38)

Adam Johnson started on the left wing with James Milner on the right wing and fit again Nedum Onuoha in at centre back. In the first half Javi Garcia brought down Milner in the penalty area but Spain's goalkeeper Asenjo saved Milner's penalty. Frasier Campbell made it 1-0 on 66 minutes when he collected a ball from Milner and fired in a shot from distance. Six minutes later substitute Theo Walcott went down the left wing before cutting the ball back to Milner to get the second goal. This was a much improved performance and it sent England through to the semi finals.

The England team in the 1-1 draw with Germany in the group stages was Loach (Lewis 46), Stearman, Tomkins, Mancienne, Taylor, Driver (Gibbs 71), Gardner, Rodwell, Johnson, Rose, Campbell (Walcott 58)

With England already qualified for the semi finals many changes were made and Germany took an early lead on 4 minutes through Gonzalo Castro. Jack Rodwell equalised for England on 30 minutes by heading in Craig Gardner's corner. Richard Stearman had a good volley saved by Germany's goalkeeper Neuer late on.

Semi final

The England team in the semi final win against Sweden was Hart, Cranie, Richards, Onuoha, Gibbs, Muamba (Johnson 116), Cattermole, Noble (Rodwell 70), Milner, Walcott, Agbonlahor (Campbell 59)

England were 3-0 up against Sweden at half time with Martin Cranie volleying home a Milner corner in the opening minute, Onuoha scoring from close range after 27 minutes and then an own goal from Mattias Bjarsmyr on 38 minutes. However Sweden brought it back to 3-3 in the second half with goals from Marcus Berg (68 and 81 minutes) and Ola Toivonen (75 minutes). Frasier Campbell was sent off for a second booking in extra time and the game went to penalties. In the penalty shootout Milner missed, Berg missed, Hart, Elm, Cattermole, Bjarsmyr, Johnson, Lustig, Walcott, Bengtsson all scored, Gibbs scored and Molins missed to give England the 5-4 win on penalties. However Agbonlahor and Hart picked up yellow cards in the match and will now miss the final along with Campbell.

Final

The England team in the 4-0 loss to Germany was Loach, Cranie (Gardner 80), Richards, Onuoha (Mancienne 46), Gibbs, Johnson, Noble, Milner, Muamba (Rodwell 77), Cattermole, Walcott. Germany's team was M Neuer, J Boateng, S Boenisch, A Beck, M Hummels (D Aogo 83), F Johnson (D Schwaab 68), B Howedes, G Castro, M Ozil (M Schmelzer 89), S Khedira, S Wagner

Theo Walcott was the lone striker on the night but did not get support leaving Germany's goalkeeper without a save to make in the final. Gonzalo Castro scored Germany's first goal on 23 minutes after a good run and through ball from Mesut Ozil. After substitute Michael Mancienne gave away a free kick 35 yards out, England's goalkeeper Loach should have saved Ozil's free kick but it went into the net to make it 2-0 on 48 minutes. Two late goals from Sandro Wagner (79 minutes and 84 minutes)  made the final score 4-0 to Germany.

The England under 21 team will be pleased to have got to the final but badly missed their suspended strike force Gabriel Agbonlahor and Frazier Campbell. Theo Walcott came in from the wing to start up front but did not get to use his pace effectively. Werder Bremen's  Mesut Ozil had a good game for Germany.
