ARGENTINA 6 SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO 0 World Cup 2006 home page Rodriguez 6, 41, Cambiasso 31 Crespo 78, Tevez 83, Messi 88 _________________________________________________________________________ Argentina gave the best performance of the World Cup so far with a great performance in their 6-0 victory over Serbia and Montenegro on 16 June 2006. Argentina's team was Abbondanzieri (goalkeeper), Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorin ,Mascherano, Rodriguez (Messi 73), Gonzalez (Cambiasso 17), Riquelme, Crespo, Saviola (Tevez 57) Serbia and Montenegro's line up was: Jevric, Duljaj, Gavrancic, Dudic, Krstajic, Koroman (Ljuboja 48), Nadj (Ergic 45), Djordjevic, Stankovic, Kezman, Milosevic (Vukic 69)
After beating a strong Ivory Coast team 2-1, Argentina booked their place in the second round by scoring six goals in this match. Maxi Rodriguez scored the first goal after only six minutes after receiving a pass from Javier Saviola on the left wing and from inside the penalty box hitting an unstoppable shot past Dragoslav Jevric. The second goal was one of the great team goals of any World Cup - there were 24 passes leading up to the goal which involved every Argentina player except the goalkeeper and right back. The move ended with Saviola out on the left side passing the ball to Esteban Cambiasso - he played the ball to Hernan Crespo inside the penalty area who back heeled the ball back to him - Cambiasso then struck the ball into the net to the right of the static goalkeeper. Rodriguez got his second goal before half time and with the Serbs getting even more frustrated in the second half, Mateja Kezman was sent off after 65 minutes. Eighteen year old Lionel Messi came on up front for Argentina and set up a goal for Crespo to knock in at the far post after 78 minutes. Another substitute striker Carlos Tevez got the fifth goal before Messi got the last goal himself after outpacing the Serbian defence. Serbia and Montenegro are now out of the World Cup as they also lost to
Holland 1-0 in their first group game and they will be cursing the draw that put
them in this group. Argentina will qualify top of the group unless they are
beaten by Holland in their last group game. For all the World Cup 2006 fixtures and results click here.
