This second round World Cup match between Brazil and Belgium took place on Monday 17 June in Kobe, Japan.

The Brazilian team was: Marcos, Cafu, Lucio, Roque Junior, Edmilson, Roberto Carlos, Gilberto, Juninho (Denilson 57), Rivaldo (Ricardinho 90), Ronaldinho (Kleberson 81), Ronaldo

The Belgium team was: De Vlieger, Van Kerckhoven, Van Buyten, Peeters (Sonck 73), Simons, Wilmots, Goor, Verheyen, Vanderhaeghe, Walem, Mpenza

Brazil won the game 2-0 to set up a meeting with England in the quarter finals of the World Cup 2002 but it was not an easy game for them. Belgium had several chances to score and had a harshly disallowed goal in the first half.

Early on in the game Mpenza had a chip to the back post from the edge of the penalty area that was tipped over by the Brazilian goalkeeper, Marcos. Then Brazil had good chances when Juninho shot just wide and Ronaldo curled a shot just past the far post.

After 36 minutes, Peeters crossed from the right and Wilmots rose above Roque Junior to head the ball into the Brazilian net. The goal was disallowed by the referee, however, for a push by Wilmots on Roque Junior but a lot of referees would have let this goal stand.

Just before half time, Ronaldo got in front of his defender and volleyed a Rivaldo cross from the left side just over the bar - then Roberto Carlos fired just wide from a tight angle.

Belgium played better than Brazil at the start of the second half and the excellent Wilmots forced a couple of good saves from Marcos.

Then against the run of play Brazil scored after 67 minutes - Ronaldinho crossed from the right and Rivaldo controlled the ball, turned and shot - the ball took a deflection off a Belgium defender (Van Buyten) which took it past the Belgium goalkeeper, Geert de Vlieger.

Goor then missed a good chance to head Belgium level before Ronaldo made sure of the win with a goal two minutes from time. This was Ronaldo's fifth goal of the tournament so far and Brazil will be the favourites against England in the quarter final.
