BRAZIL 2 AUSTRALIA 0 World Cup 2006 home page Adriano 48, Fred 88 _________________________________________________________________________ Brazil and Australia played their second World Cup 2006 game on 18 June 2006 in Munich, Germany and won 2-0. Brazil had beaten Croatia 1-0 in their first game and Australia beat Japan 3-1 with a late come back. Brazil's line up was: Dida Cafu Lucio Juan Roberto Carlos
Emerson
Ze Roberto
Kaka
Adriano
Ronaldo
Ronaldinho
Australia's line up was: Schwarzer
Neill
Moore
Popovic
Emerton Culina
Grella
Cahill Sterjovski
Chipperfield Viduka
Ronaldo had been criticised for not being 100% in the last game but after three minutes of this match he set up Kaka to volley wide. Australia then played some good football and were not being overrun by Brazil. Viduka and Culina had long range shots for Australia but they went straight to Brazil's goalkeeper Dida. After 35 minutes Ronaldo had a good opportunity to score on the volley but missed the ball completely. He had another chance five minutes later when he put the ball just wide. As half time approached the Australian substitute Bresciano (replacing the injured Popovic) hit a dipping shot that went just over the bar. In the second half after 48 minutes Brazil took the lead - Ronaldo rolled the ball across the edge of the box to Adriano who shot through Chipperfield's legs and in by the post to Schwarzer's left. The second half then opened up as Australia pushed forward. After 57 minutes Harry Kewell (who had just come on as substitute) should have equalised when Dida pushed the ball straight to him by mistake but he missed an open goal - then 10 minutes later he put a shot over the bar after a forward run. Soon afterwards Kaka forced Schwarzer into a good save and then with 15 minutes left Robinho should have scored for Brazil. Bresciano then forced a diving save from Dida and with five minutes left Viduka chipped the goalkeeper but the ball went just over the crossbar. After 88 minutes with Australia pushing up, a Brazilian counter attack gave them a second goal. From the right side Robinho hit the ball against the near post but it went across the face of goal for substitute Fred to tap in. The 2-0 result flattered Brazil as Australia played well above expectations. Ronaldo had a reasonable game but did not look as sharp or as fit as usual and was substituted in the second half. Brazil have now qualified for the second round but Australia will probably
need a draw in their last group match against Croatia to go through (if Japan
inflict a heavy defeat on Brazil in their last match then Australia would need a
win). For all the World Cup 2006 fixtures and results click here.
