ENGLAND v CAMEROON PREVIEW World Cup football home page _________________________________________________________________________ See the match report on Sunday's match here. This friendly between England and Cameroon is to be played on Sunday 26 May 2002 in Kobe, Japan at 7.00am (BST - British Summer Time). Brief match highlights for the most recent encounter with Cameroon is shown at the bottom of this page. This
is the last warm up game before England take on Sweden on June 2 in the World
Cup 2002. The England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson will be fairly sure of the
team he wants to start with against Sweden so this is the last chance for the
squad players to impress. Eriksson will have wanted to start this game with what he
considers will be his strongest team but he does have players in his squad
carrying injuries. David Beckham has already said that he does not want to risk
taking part in this friendly match -

The England goalkeeper David Seaman and left back Ashley Cole may miss the game with Cameroon with minor injuries. Nicky Butt has only just returned to full training following his knee injury, while Kieron Dyer is still injured. Michael Owen may be rested for this game too. Could the England starting line up for the match be:
Trevor Sinclair Owen Hargreaves Paul Scholes Joe Cole
Darius Vassell
Emile Heskey Cameroon are the reigning African and Olympic champions and go to the World
Cup 2002 with high hopes - they are in group E along
with Germany, the Republic of Ireland and Saudi Arabia.
Note that when they won the Olympic gold medal in Sydney last year they had to use an Under 23 team with only a couple of older players - the England football team does not compete in the Olympics as we compete as "Great Britain" in the Olympics and are not allowed a combined football team (including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Cameroon are led by German coach, Winfried Schafer and are now showing that the can defend well in addition to showing off their skills going forward. Cameroon's best players are their strikers Patrick Mboma and Samuel Eto'o, Arsenal defender Lauren and defender Rigobert Song (who used to play in England and is Cameroon's captain). They have a solid goalkeeper in Alioum Boukar and Marc-Vivien Foe is a good defensive midfielder. Along with Japan, Cameroon are one of the outsiders who could do well in this World Cup according to their manager - the best Cameroon have done to date in the World Cup was the quarter finals in the World Cup 1990 (when they lost to England 3-2 after extra time) The Cameroon side submitted to FIFA on 21 May was GOALKEEPERS: Boukar, Songo'o, Kamerni; DEFENDERS: Song, Nkongo, Mettomo, Niend, Beaka; MIDFIELD: Tchato, Ainoudji, Djemba, Foe, Lauren, Ndo, Kome, Geremy, Olembe, Epalle; STRIKERS: Eto'o, Mboma, Ndiefi, Suffo, Job Cameroon landed in Nakatsue, Japan over two days late in the early hours on Friday 24 May after a pay dispute delayed their trip until it was sorted out. They had flight delays on their way too and this cannot have helped their preparations for the friendly match with England on Sunday 26 May.
The last time England played Cameroon was in a friendly game on 15 November 1997 at Wembley. England won 2-0 on that day with goals from Paul Scholes and Robbie Fowler. England had just qualified for the World Cup 1998 with a 0-0 draw away in Italy and so manager Glenn Hoddle made a few changes to the England side which proved to be largely successful. The England team was Martyn, Phil Neville, Campbell, Southgate (Rio Ferdinand 39), Hinchcliff, Beckham, Ince, Gascoigne (Lee 73), McManaman, Scholes (Sutton 79), Fowler The Cameroon line up was Ongandzi, Song, Wome, Mimboe, Foe, Kalla, Job, Etchi, Etame (Olembe 73), Ipoua (Billong 46), Mboma (Njitap 76) After 45 minutes of this match, England went 1-0 up - Paul Gascoigne moved forward with the ball impressively beating three players before passing to Paul Scholes - Scholes then looped the ball over the goalkeeper, Ongandzi and into the net. A minute later (right at the end of the first half) David Beckham crossed the ball to Robbie Fowler, who scored with a header to make it 2-0. In the second half, Cameroon showed they could pass the ball well with some flowing football but rarely threatened the England goal. England could have added to the 2-0 lead when Fowler hit the bar midway through the second half. This game will be remembered for a superb performance from Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand (making his debut) doing well when he came on for the injured Southgate.
