KIERON DYER INJURED ON 11 MAY 2002 World Cup football home page _________________________________________________________________________ *** The latest news on the injury is at the bottom of this page *** Kieron Dyer, who was included in the England squad on May 9 picked up a knee ligament injury in the Newcastle 3-1 away defeat to Southampton on 11 May 2002. Dyer was tackled by Southampton's Tahar El Khalej - the tackle was considered bad enough for a red card for the Southampton player from the match referee. Dyer received a couple of minutes treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher. The next day the England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson said that Dyer was "almost for sure" out of the World Cup as doctors think it could take almost four weeks before he could start practicing again. "If something could happen in one weeks time, a miracle, I might think about it. But almost for sure he will not play" said Eriksson. First reserve Danny Murphy and second reserve Trevor Sinclair had already been called up to the squad to replace the injured Kieron Dyer and Steven Gerrard - Steven Gerrard will not now go to the World Cup due to injury
On 21 May, Kieron Dyer was named in the 23 man squad submitted to FIFA even though he is still injured at present. Dyer's reserve, Trevor Sinclair returned to England the next day but was later called back to the squad when Danny Murphy became injured. On 25 May, Eriksson said that if Dyer could not convince him by 1 June that he will be fit for the England game against Argentina then he would be replaced (as 1 June is the last day that Eriksson can replace a player due to injury). Eriksson said that if Dyer took a medical examination today he would fail it.
