Ecuador's line up was Mora, Hurtado (capt), De La Cruz, Espinoza (Guagua 68), Reasco, Mendez, Castillo, Valencia (Urrutia 73), E Tenorio, Delgado, C Tenorio (Kaviedes 46) Costa Rica's team was Purras, Marin (capt), Umana, Gonzales (Hernandes 56), Wallace, Fonseca (Saborio 29), Solis, Centeno (Bernard 84), Sequeira, Wanchope, Gomez Costa Rica's first match was a 4-2 defeat
to Germany. Ecuador were unchanged from their 2-0 win over Poland and went
1-0 up in this match early on.
Luis Valencia crossed from the right wing and Carlos Tenorio got ahead of his marker to head in the opening goal after eight minutes. Valencia was playing well on the right wing and gave Agustin Delgardo a clear chance to score at the end of the half with another excellent cross but the half time score stayed at 1-0. Delgardo did get a goal after 54 minutes of the match when he ran forward and powered a shot into the net at the near post from a tight angle. Saborio hit the crossbar for Costa Rica late on but then Ecuador made it 3-0 in the 90th minute. From the right side, Edison Mendez found substitute Ivan Kaviedes at the far post and he volleyed in the third goal to give Ecuador a relatively easy victory. This result sent Costa Rica out of the World Cup but Ecuador will top group A
if they avoid defeat to Germany in their last group match. If Germany do beat
Ecuador then Ecuador will go through to the second round as runners up in Group
