ENGLAND v ECUADOR PREVIEW World Cup 2006 home page _________________________________________________________________________ *** CLICK HERE FOR THE MATCH REPORT ***
England beat Paraguay 1-0 and then beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 and then drew with Sweden 2-2 to win group B and qualify for the second round. England will now face Ecuador who came second to Germany in Group A. The winners of this match will face Portugal or Holland in the quarter final on Saturday 1 July 2006 at 4pm BST. Ecuador came third in the South American World Cup 2006 qualification group behind Brazil and Argentina. Ecuador rested several players in their 3-0 defeat to Germany in their World Cup 2006 final group match as they had already qualified for the second round. They could well start with the same team that beat Costa Rica 3-0 in their second group game. Agustin Delgardo and Carlos Tenorio have both scored twice in the World Cup 2006 and are likely to start up front together. Ecuador's line up could be Mora, Hurtado (capt), De La Cruz, Espinoza, Reasco, Mendez, Castillo, Valencia, E Tenorio, Delgado, C Tenorio
Ecuador also beat Poland 2-0 in their first match with goals from Carlos Tenorio
and Agustin Delgardo.
Wayne Rooney should start in attack after his recovery from injury and good form in the last game against Sweden. Peter Crouch may start with him as he has got six goals in his last six games and is England's striker in form. Michael Owen has returned to England and will take no further part in the World Cup after picking up a bad knee injury in the opening minute of the final group game match against Sweden. Michael Owen has told the rest of the England squad to "win it without him". Steven Gerrard is likely to return in the centre of midfield even though Owen Hargreaves played well in the defensive midfield role against Sweden. Gary Neville has a calf muscle tear and will probably miss this game so Jamie Carragher could continue at right back for England (or Owen Hargreaves may take that spot to give more pace down the right wing). Rio Ferdinand is still struggling with the groin injury he suffered from in the game against Sweden but he did take part in training on Saturday 24 June 2006 - Sol Campbell is standing by to continue in the centre of defence if necessary. Unless Eriksson decides to change his 4-4-2 formation the England line up is likely to be:
Paul Robinson
David Beckham (Capt) Frank Lampard
Steven Gerrard
Joe Cole
Wayne Rooney
Peter Crouch If Eriksson decides on a 4-5-1 formation then Michael Carrick could come into the England starting line up with Peter Crouch dropping to the bench. The England line up could then be:
Paul Robinson
David Beckham (Capt) Frank Lampard
Michael Carrick
Steven Gerrard
Joe Cole Wayne Rooney
