The England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson decided to stay with the 4-5-1 formation he used in the victory over Ecuador. Owen Hargreaves moved back to be the holding midfield player as Gary Neville had returned from injury to come back in at right back. The England line up was:
Paul Robinson
David Beckham (Capt) Frank Lampard
Owen Hargreaves Steven Gerrard Joe Cole
Wayne Rooney (sent off 62)
Portugal's team was Ricardo, Nuno Valente,
Miguel, Carvalho, Meira, Maniche, Figo (Postiga 86), Petit, Ronaldo, Tiago
(Viana 74), Pauleta (Simao 63) Cristiano Ronaldo recovered from the dead leg he was given the week before in the 1-0 win against Holland but Continha and Deco were suspended as they received red cards in that match. England were the better team in this game but neither side could find the net despite the chances that both sides created. Figo had the best chance of the first half but put his shot just wide. Then early on in the second half Joe Cole put the ball over the bar from 10 yards after good work on the right wing from substitute Aaron Lennon. Wayne Rooney was sent off after 62 minutes for kicking Ricardo Carvalho between his legs when Carvalho was on the ground. There was no excuse for Rooney's actions despite not being awarded a free kick for fouls on him just before this. Controversially Ronaldo went up to the Argentinian referee Elizondo to plead for Rooney to be punished for this foul and he then appeared to wink to his team mates as Rooney was sent from the pitch.
When England were down to 10 men they were forced to defend and hit on the counter attack. Frank Lampard could have scored from a free kick and Lennon's follow up was also well saved by Ricardo. In the second period of extra time Postiga headed the ball into the net past Robinson but the offside flag went up and the goal was disallowed. Both sides tired in extra time and the game went to penalties. In the penalty shootout Simao scored for Portugal but then Lampard had his shot saved as Ricardo dived to his left. Viana then missed for Portugal before Hargreaves levelled the score at 1-1. Petit then missed and Gerrard had his attempt saved but Postiga scored to make it 2-1 to Portugal on penalties. Substitute Jamie Carragher who had just come on scored on his first attempt but the referee made him retake the penalty as the goalkeeper was not ready and he had not blown his whistle. He had did second shot saved and then Ronaldo scored to send Portugal through to the semi finals. This was the England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson's last match in charge of England and David Beckham resigned as England captain the next day (although he said he still wants to play for England). Beckham received an ankle injury in this game which would have kept him out of any potential semi final and final in any case.
Portugal will meet France in the semi finals after their shock 1-0 victory over
Brazil later that evening.
