ENGLAND 1 ECUADOR 0 World Cup 2006 home page Beckham 60 _________________________________________________________________________
England beat Paraguay 1-0 and then beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 and then drew with Sweden 2-2 to win group B before winning this second round match. England will now face Portugal on Saturday 1 July at 4pm BST. The England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson decided to use a 4-5-1 formation with Michael Carrick as the holding midfield player and Peter Crouch dropping to the bench. Owen Hargreaves also replaced Jamie Carragher at right back. The England line up was:
Paul Robinson*
David Beckham (Capt) Frank Lampard Michael
Carrick
Steven Gerrard
Joe Cole Wayne Rooney
* yellow card This was the first match that England played better in the second half than the first half since the World Cup 1998 and England won 1-0 with a David Beckham free kick after 60 minutes.
Ecuador had the first real chance when Ashley Cole's sliding tackle deflected
Carlos Tenorio's shot onto the crossbar. Wayne Rooney was up front by himself as
Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard did not get forward as much as expected in the
first half.
England improved after the break and started to control the game more. After 60 minutes, David Beckham scored from a free kick 30 yards out on the left side of midfield - he hit the ball over the wall and in at the near post to make it 1-0 to England. Beckham has now scored in the World Cup 1998, the World Cup 2002 and this World Cup. After 74 minutes, England could have been 2-0 up after good work from Rooney when he got to the touchline inside the penalty box - Rooney cut the ball back to Frank Lampard but he put a great chance over the bar. Lampard also had other chances to score but England held on for the 1-0 win.
England are now in the quarter finals without being very impressive in any match
to date but they have got the results they needed.
Who played well: Ashley Cole showed he was back to his best with an excellent performance at left back. Michael Carrick played well in the defensive midfield role and Wayne Rooney looked threatening when he did get the ball. Who could have played better: After being the best player on the pitch in the last game Joe Cole had a quiet game. Frank Lampard also missed a few chances to score. This was a performance when the England team did just enough to win the game.
