WORLD CUP 2006 ENGLAND INJURIES

PRE TOURNAMENT ENGLAND INJURY NEWS

Wayne Rooney has two fractures to a bone in his right foot after a tackle by Ferreira in Manchester United's defeat by Chelsea on 29 April 2006. Click here to see the latest on the Wayne Rooney injury.
Michael Owen is now recovering from injury after breaking a bone in his foot on 31 December 2005. He had an additional operation on 24 March 2006. Owen was a substitute in Newcastle's game on 29 April 2006 but did say after the game that his foot was still giving him pain. A scan the next day showed no further damage but he was rested for Newcastle's final game of the season on 7 May. He played in England's training camp in the Algarve, Portugal and is expected to play in all three World Cup warm up games. On 17 May the England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson said "Michael looks very sharp, scoring goals yesterday and today" in training. Owen then played for 60 minutes as captain of the England B team on 25 May 2006 and played again on 30 May 2006.
Gary Neville picked up a slight hamstring strain in the 3-1 win over Hungary on 30 May 2006. Eriksson said that Gary Neville should be fit to play again by Tuesday 6 June 2006.
Jermaine Jenas cracked his shin in training on 21 April 2006 and had still not recovered to play in the last Tottenham game of the season. He has now recovered from injury and scored a goal playing for the England B team on 25 May 2006.
John Terry missed the final two games of the Premiership season as he twisted his ankle on 29 April 2006 playing for Chelsea against Manchester United. He has now recovered from injury and was playing at England's training camp in the Algarve and scored a goal in the England game on 30 May 2006.
Ashley Cole twisted his ankle in his comeback match for Arsenal playing for the reserves at the end of February. He had been out of the team since October 2005 with a broken bone in his right foot. He played 90 minutes for the Arsenal reserves on 20 April 2006 and played again for the first team on 1 May 2006. In the Champions League final on 17 May 2006 he played and looked back to full fitness.
Sol Campbell has recovered from his ankle injury but suffered a broken nose playing for Arsenal against Portsmouth on 12 April 2006. He is now back with the Arsenal first team and played again on 25 April 2006 in the Champions League - he also played and scored a goal in the final itself.
Robert Green (Norwich goalkeeper) picked up an ankle injury warming up before the match against Sheffield Wednesday on 15 April 2006. He missed the last game of the season for Norwich on 30 April but recovered and was included in the World Cup squad. However on 25 May 2006 then he ruptured his groin playing for the England B team against Belarus and he will now miss the World Cup 2006.
Owen Hargreaves has recovered from a groin operation and has been back playing for Bayern Munich since March 2006. He was picked for the World Cup 2006 after some very good performances towards the end of Bayern Munich's season.
Luke Young picked up an ankle injury on 2 April 2006 but the Charlton manager, Alan Curbishley, said he has started training again but he did not play in their last match of the season. He was chosen as a standby for the World Cup 2006 but withdrew after injuring his ankle in training on 19 May 2006.
Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham midfielder) was also chosen as a reserve for the World Cup but withdrew with a back injury on 22 May 2006. See the latest England World Cup squad here.

PLAYERS NOT SELECTED FOR THE WORLD CUP DUE TO INJURY

Ledley King fractured a bone in his foot playing for Tottenham against Everton on 15 April 2006 and will take at least four weeks to recover. He therefore missed the rest of the season for Tottenham and was not selected to go to the World Cup.
Jonathan Woodgate
has only played a few games with Real Madrid because of sciatic pain linked to a succession of thigh injuries. He could not therefore be involved in the World Cup 2006.
Kieron Dyer has missed most of the season with hamstring problems and will not be fit to play for Newcastle again until the 2006/2007 pre season. He will therefore miss the World Cup 2006.
Alan Smith will not recover in time for the World Cup after badly breaking his leg trying to block a free kick in Manchester United's game away at Liverpool in February 2006.
Chris Kirkland missed the rest of the season after he broke his finger in training in March 2006. He was on loan at West Bromwich Albion.
