ENGLAND 2 PORTUGAL 2 Euro 2004 football home page Owen 3, Lampard 115 Postiga 82, Rui Costa 110 Portugal won 6-5 on penalties _____________________________________________________________________ England lost to Portugal on penalties in the their Euro 2004 quarter final game in Lisbon, Portugal on Thursday 24 June 2004 at 19.45pm and so went out of the competition. The England team was:
David James The team from Portugal was Ricardo, Miguel (Rui Costa 78), Jorge Andrade, Carvalho, Nuno Valente, Costinha (Simao 62), Maniche, Figo (Postiga 74), Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno Gomes
England started well and were ahead after 3 minutes when Michael Owen scored his first goal in five games. David James kicked the ball upfield and Costinha headed the ball backwards towards his own goal - this put Michael Owen clear and from near the penalty spot he flicked the ball over the Portuguese keeper, Ricardo and into the net. After 25 minutes Andrade challenged Wayne Rooney inside the penalty box which unfortunately left Rooney with a broken foot and he was replaced by Darius Vassell soon afterwards. England had more chances to score in the first half, particularly from Owen and Sol Campbell, but James was kept busy at the other end too and Portugal had the better of the first half. England's game against Croatia was only three days earlier and the midfield was beginning to look tired in the second half. Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard were replaced by Phil Neville and Owen Hargreaves as England sat back and tried to defend the 1-0 lead.
After 82 minutes, England finally caved in to the Portuguese pressure when
substitute Postiga headed in a cross from Simao to level the game at 1-1.
England now started to attack again and with one minute left Michael Owen hit the crossbar - the ball came out to Campbell who headed the ball into the net at close range - the referee decided that John Terry had obstructed Ricardo but this decision was very harsh. The silver goal rule applied in extra time (ie if a goal is scored in the first period of extra time, play would continue to the end of that 15 minute period and then only if the scores were level would the second 15 minute period be played). With the score still at 1-1 after the first period the second period of extra time was played and Portugal scored after four minutes to give them a 2-1 lead. Rui Costa went forward from midfield, brushed off a challenge from Phil Neville and fired in a terrific goal from the edge of the penalty area. With six minutes of extra time remaining, England equalised - Terry headed down a David Beckham corner and Frank Lampard hit the ball in to the goalkeepers left from six yards out. With the final score at 2-2 the game went to penalties. Beckham took the first penalty but sent his shot over the bar to end a very average tournament for him. Deco, Owen, Simao and Lampard then scored before Rui Costa missed his penalty - Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Hargreaves and Maniche then scored to make the penalty shoot-out 4-4 after five kicks each. Ashley Cole scored his penalty and then Postiga did the same. Darius Vassell was next to take a penalty but saw his effort saved with a diving save to his left by Ricardo. Ricardo then stepped up himself to beat James and give Portugal the 6-5 victory on penalties. England had been knocked out of a major tournament again on penalties, after losing the same way in the World Cup 1990, Euro 96 and the World Cup 1998.
Who played well: Michael Owen got a deserved goal for England as did Frank Lampard. Sol Campbell had another excellent game and was England's joint best player along with Wayne Rooney in Euro 2004. Ashley Cole also kept England in the game by defending well. Who had a bad game: the referee Urs Meier cost England the match with the decisions he made during the game.
