Before the final, Germany had only let in one goal (in the 1-1 draw with Ireland) while Brazil had scored in every game. Jens Jeremies came in for the suspended Michael Ballack for Germany while Ronaldinho returned for Brazil after being suspended in the semi final. This was Cafu's third World Cup final for Brazil and no player before him has played in three World Cup finals. Germany had the better of the opening 40 minutes of the game but Brazil had the better chances. After 18 minutes, Ronaldinho hit an excellent through ball to Ronaldo - inside the penalty area Ronaldo surprisingly put his shot wide of the far post. Then after 29 minutes, Ronaldo was put through by Ronaldinho again but his weak shot was saved by the German goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn.
With five minutes of the first half to go, Kleberson shot wide from just outside
the penalty area and then after 44 minutes he hit the crossbar with an excellent
curled shot (again from outside the penalty area). Right at the end of the first
half Roberto Carlos fired a ball into the box which reached Ronaldo but Kahn
saved his close range shot. After 78 minutes Brazil scored again to go 2-0 up. From the right wing Kleberson threaded an excellent pass through to Ronaldo at the edge of the penalty area (after Rivaldo fooled the German defence by stepping over the ball) - Ronaldo shot accurately into the net near Kahn's left hand post. In the last 10 minutes of the match substitute Oliver Bierhoff could have pulled a goal back but had his shot saved well by Marcos. The game finished 2-0 to Brazil to give them their fifth World Cup win and the Brazilian captain, Cafu collected the World Cup from Pele. The man of the match was Ronaldo (who had a poor game in the World Cup final 1998 after suffering from food poisoning).
Ronaldo won the golden boot after scoring eight goals in the competition ahead
of Rivaldo and Klose who both scored 5 goals. Belgium collected the World Cup
2002 fair play award.
