France drew with Switzerland 0-0 in their first World Cup 2006 game on 13 June 2006.

France's line up was: Barthez, Abidal, Gallas, Thuram, Sagnol, Zidane, Makelele, Viera, Ribery (Saha 70), Wiltord (Dhorasoo 84), Henry

Switzerland's team was: Zuberbuhler, Magnin, Senderos, Muller (Djourou 74), Degen, Cabanas, Vogel, Wicky (Margairaz 81), Barnetta, Frei, Streller (Gygax 58)

France were favourites to win the game but Switzerland played well and both sides had good chances in the game. Franck Ribery started for France after impressing in the warm up games but this was not his best game. Several French players including Patrick Viera (Juventus) and Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid) in midfield gave below par performances.

In the first half France started well and striker Thierry Henry (Arsenal) put a header over the bar early on. Switzerland had the best opportunity to score in the first half - Barnetta put in a free kick and Senderos only needed the slightest of touches to head the ball into the net but he missed and the ball hit the post and came out - Alexander Frei hit the rebound over the bar. Henry then had a penalty turned down when his shot hit Patrick Muller's hand.

Switzerland had a great chance to take the lead in the second half when Gygax headed the ball against the goalkeeper from inside the six yard box. Then substitute Vikash Dharasoo almost gave France a last minute winner after Saha chested the ball back to him inside the box but he fired just wide.

Right at the end of the match Frei rightly received a yellow card for trying to put a free kick into the French net with his hand - he effectively took the ball away from team mate Djourou who was just behind him and could have scored so the game finished 0-0.
