There was a shock 1-0 win for Senegal against World Champions France in the first World Cup 2002 match which started at 12.30pm (BST - British Summer time) in Seoul on 31 May 2002 after the opening ceremony.

The French team was Barthez, Thuram, Dessailly, Leboeuf, Lizarazu, Viera, Petit, Djorkaeff (Dugarry 60), Wiltord (D Cisse 80), Trezeguet, Henry

The Senegal team was Sylva, Daf, Diatta, A Cisse, Coly,  Diao, PM Diop, Fadiga, PB Diop, Ndiaye, Diouf

Senegal had a dream start to their World Cup finals and gave everyone an insight into how African football has improved in the last four years. Senegal's goalkeeper Sylva was the man of the match for some excellent saves and Senegal had their luck too but now only need one win out of their last two games (against Denmark and Uruguay) to probably finish top of the group.

Pape Bouba Diop scored what turned out to be the winning goal after half an hour of the game - Attacker El Hadji Diouf got past Frank Leboeuf down the wing on the left - he crossed to Diop who came into the goalmouth and scored with the help of a mix up at the near post between Emmanuel Petit and French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.

France had hit the post before Senegal scored from a David Trezeguet chance on 22 minutes. France had the greater possession for the rest of the match but failed to take their chances. Senegal were good at counter attacking and closing down the French side.

In the second half, Khalilou Fadiga hit the crossbar with Leboeuf giving him too much space to shoot. Thierry Henry then hit the crossbar for France and late on France had several efforts to equalise but could not covert them.

France's best player, Zinedine Zidane (midfield) may well miss the next game for France through injury too but they do need him back into the side quickly. France's manager Roger Lemerre said that nothing is ruined as there are still two more games to play.

If Senegal do finish top of this group they will face the second place team in England's group.
