Germany  booked their place in the second round and may have put Poland out of the World Cup with a late goal to get a deserved 1-0 victory against Poland on 14 June 2006.

Germany's team was: Lehmann, Freidrich (Odonkor 63), Mertesacker, Metzelder, Lahm, Schweinsteiger (Borowski 76), Ballack, Frings., Schneider, Podolski (Neuville 71), Klose

Poland's team was: Boroc, Bosacki, Baszczynski, Bak, Zewakow (Dudka 73), Sobolewski, Krzynowek (Lewandowski 77),  Smolarek, Radomski, Zurawski, Jelen (Brozek 90)

Poland looked good defensively and held Germany at bay despite being reduced to 10 men after Poland's Radoslaw Sobolewski was sent off in the second half for his second booking. However, just before full time Germany eventually took one of their chances when substitute Oliver Neuville scored from inside the box after a cross from David Odonkor on the right side.

Poland are therefore out of the World Cup 2006 unless they can beat Costa Rica in their last World Cup game and Ecuador lose to both Costa Rica and Germany in their next games.
