ENGLAND 3 HUNGARY 1 World Cup 2006 home page Gerrard 47, Terry 52, Crouch 85 Dardai 55 ____________________________________________________________________________ This friendly between England and Hungary was played on 30 May 2006 at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium at 8.05pm (BST - British Summer Time) as part of England's warm up for the World Cup 2006. Hungary have not qualified for the World Cup since 1986. England's line up was:
Jamie Carragher
David Beckham (captain) Steven
Gerrard Frank Lampard
Joe Cole
Michael Owen Subs not used: Bridge, P Neville, Dawson, Carrick, Jenas, Lennon, Downing, Defoe, Johnson, James, Carson, Foster The team from Hungary was Kiraly, Feher, Eger, Komlosi (Vanczak 8), Halmosi, Molnar (Vadocz 82), Gera, Dardai, Toth (Torghelle 61), Szabics (Polonkai 73), Huszti
The England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson said before the match that he would pick a very strong team against Hungary - the main surprise was the change of formation from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 and Jamie Carragher being picked as the defensive midfielder ahead of Michael Carrick. This change of formation was done to let Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard both attack more from midfield although it was Gerrard that got forward more. England started controlling the game early on but without any end product. Hungary had the first decent chance after 21 minutes when Huszti fired a shot wide. England did not really threaten to score goal until ten minutes before half time - Joe Cole was brought down outside the penalty box and David Beckham's free kick went just over the crossbar. After 40 minutes of the match Beckham put in a great cross from the right wing and Owen's header from close range was saved by the Hungarian goalkeeper, Kiraly. From the same passage of play Steven Gerrard went forward with the ball and fell over in the penalty box - there was minimum contact from the Hungarian defender, Feher, but the referee gave a penalty. Frank Lampard took the penalty but Kiraly dived to his right to save again and Owen headed the rebound over the crossbar. Three minutes later Joe Cole headed the ball against the far post after another good cross from Beckham on the right wing and the first half ended 0-0. Owen Hargreaves replaced Gary Neville at half time after Neville complained of a tight hamstring. Jamie Carragher moved to right back with Hargreaves taking the defensive midfield role. After one minute of the second half England went 1-0 up. David Beckham took a free kick on the right wing and the number 9 for the night, Steven Gerrard, lost his marker and from near the penalty spot he headed the ball into the net at the far post.
Five minutes later England made it 2-0 after another Beckham free kick but this time on the left side of midfield - Beckham hit the ball into the box and John Terry headed in from inside the six yard box. Dardai then replied for Hungary after 55 minutes of the game with a long range shot that went in the top corner to Robinson's left. After 65 minutes Theo Walcott got his first full international cap and became England's youngest ever international player at 17 years and 75 days (a record previously held by Wayne Rooney).
Paul Robinson kept England in the lead after 76 minutes by pushing a shot from Eger over his crossbar. After 85 minutes England went 3-1 up - Joe Cole threaded through an accurate pass to substitute Peter Crouch and from the edge of the penalty box he turned and hit and excellent shot across the goalkeeper to his right and into the net.
Who played well: David Beckham's free kicks and corners were always threatening and he had his best game for England in a while. Joe Cole had another good game for England and got better as the game progressed. Jamie Carragher played well in the defensive midfield role and then at right back and Peter Crouch scored a goal when he came on as substitute. John Terry had a great game too with a solid performance in defence, scoring his first goal for England and having other chances too. Who could have played better: Michael Owen should have scored from Beckham's cross and looked like he is just returning from injury. Owen Hargreaves looked fast but should have closed Dardai down quicker to prevent his goal from long range.
