This friendly was a warm up game for the game World Cup qualification game away to Greece a couple of weeks later. England continued their good run of late and won this game 4-0 but the game will probably be remembered for the England Captain, David Beckham, sporting a Mohican haircut. His haircut was not widely appreciated in the press at the time but his performance in the game silenced the critics.

Scholes shoots from 30 yards out to score in the top corner

England began well and were 1-0 up after 3 minutes. From well outside the penalty area Paul Scholes struck a tremendous shot into the top corner of the goal to the goalkeepers left.

After 14 minutes, Beckham hit a ball forward to Steven Gerrard on the right wing who ran in front of the Mexican defence - Gerrard then crossed to Robbie Fowler who scored in front of his marker to make it 2-0. Fowler then brought a great save out of Sanchez to stop the Liverpool striker getting his second goal three minutes later.

England were 3-0 up on the 29th minute. Michael Owen was fouled outside the box and Beckham curled in the free kick from 25 yards out - it went in the top corner of the goal to the goalkeepers right.

England played extremely well in the first half but there were 9 England substitutions at half time - Gareth Southgate took over from David Beckham as captain for the second half and there were new caps for Alan Smith in attack and Joe Cole and Michael Carrick in midfield.

Emile Heskey gave away a penalty after 64 minutes as substitute Osorno went down inside the box near the goal line - David James watched as Abundis missed with the penalty as the shot went past James' left post.

After 75 minutes, Andy Cole was fouled outside the box after a good dribble and with Beckham now off the field, Teddy Sheringham stepped up to take the free kick. He took just as good a free kick as Beckham had done earlier and he put the ball in the net to the goalkeepers right to make it 4-0 to England.

Who played well:  Strikers Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen had good games and David Beckham game a captain's performance from midfield. The star player was Paul Scholes though, who had a great first half.
