On Wednesday 22 May, Danny Murphy got a foot injury towards the end of the training session that day and may now be doubtful for the World Cup 2002 (which at the time of the injury was only 11 days away to England's first game against Sweden)..

An X-ray taken after the injury showed no fracture but Murphy is to have a bone scan by Friday 24 May which will determine how bad the injury is. The English FA said that he landed awkwardly on his left foot and felt a sudden sharp pain.

Danny Murphy was the first reserve that replaced the injured Steven Gerrard in the England squad. If the injury to Murphy proves to be serious, Trevor Sinclair may be recalled to the squad - he had earlier got a flight home to London having not been included in the 23 man squad given to FIFA the day before.

Friday 24 May: After a bone scan in Jeju, South Korea it was announced that Danny Murphy will not now take part in the World Cup 2002 - he had fractured the second metatarsal bone of his left foot (this is the longest bone in his toe next to the big toe) in a similar injury to that of David Beckham and Gary Neville. Murphy will need to be in plaster for three weeks and so Trevor Sinclair will take his place in the squad.

Trevor Sinclair was on standby with the squad in South Korea to replace Kieron Dyer but after Dyer's injury looked like healing in time he returned to England on 22 May. Now Sinclair will be flying straight away to Awaji Island, Japan to meet up with the squad again.
