WHO WILL START FOR ENGLAND AT RIGHT BACK    World Cup football home page

Will Danny Mills or Wes Brown start the first game against Sweden on June 2 in the right back position? Gary Neville was the automatic right back choice until he got injured. Now, after good performances for England against South Korea and Cameroon (where he played the second half as a right winger), Mills may be favourite to start against Sweden on June 2.

Wes Brown played the game against Cameroon at right back and improved a lot in the second half - Wes Brown therefore also has a good chance to play at right back in the game against Sweden.

Danny Mills may have been playing the right midfield position against Cameroon in the second half in case David Beckham is not fit to play 90 minutes against Sweden and the England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, wants defensive cover in that role.

The main threat down the left wing in the Swedish match may be Freddie Ljungberg (who has played very well for Arsenal at the end of the 2001/2002 season) but he has a hip and groin problem which is keeping him out of training at the moment. He played in Sweden's 1-1 draw against Japan and will probably still play against England on Sunday. Ljungberg likes to move inside and shoot with his right foot and so either Brown or Mills will have to be aware of this and keep him out wide on his left foot.

If David Beckham does start the match against Sweden as captain on the right wing, the other major decision Eriksson has to make is whether to play Owen Hargreaves or Nicky Butt in central midfield. Scholes' and Beckham's team mate Butt has now recovered from injury and he may get the opportunity to start as the defensive central midfielder with his Manchester United team mates. If Beckham does not start the match, Hargreaves (who has played well for England recently) may start the match on the right wing.

Darius Vassell would be unlucky to be dropped for England's first game against Sweden after his England performances. If Vassell starts, Heskey is almost certain to start on the left side of midfield (as Eriksson has confirmed that Heskey will start the match against Sweden). If Vassell is dropped, Heskey should start with Liverpool team mate Michael Owen up front.
