The Russian referee Valentin Ivanov gave 16 cards in this game as Portugal beat a young Dutch team and went through to the quarter finals in this hard fought game. Both teams had two players sent off.

Holland started the stronger and Van Bommel fired a shot just wide early on.

Maniche scored the only goal of the game after 23 minutes. Deco crossed from the right hand side and after a short pass back from Pauleta, Maniche had a great shot from just inside the penalty area that went in at the top corner.

Portugal's winger Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced after 34 minutes with a dead leg. Van Persie then put the ball just wide of the goal for Holland before Pauleta forced a decent save from Van der Sar.

At the end of the first half Costinha was sent off after getting a second yellow card after a handball. Portugal's manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari therefore changed the formation to 4-4-1 at half time with the introduction of Petit.

In the second half Luis Figo was lucky to stay on the pitch after only receiving a yellow card for head butting Van Bommel. Then Boulahrouz got his second yellow card after 63 minutes when he elbowed Figo in the face. Deco got his second yellow card fifteen minutes later before Van Bronckhorst was sent off (also for receiving two yellow cards) on full time.

Holland should have equalised in the second half but Cocu hit the bar with a straightforward chance and Van Bommel forced a save from Ricardo. FIFA's number three seeds Holland are therefore out of the World Cup.
