England then beat Ecuador 1-0 in the second round and will face Portugal in the quarter final on Saturday 1 July 2006 at 4pm BST. Portugal beat England and so knocked them out of Euro 2004 (and Portugal also beat England in Euro 2000). Portugal's manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari was in charge of Portugal in Euro 2004 and was also manager of Brazil when they defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup 2002. Scolari was in the frame to be the next England manager and effectively turned the position down before Steve McLaren got the job. Sven Goran Eriksson is still England's manager until the end of this tournament. Portugal topped group D of the World Cup 2006 after beating Angola, Iran and Mexico. They then beat Holland 1-0 in the second round but this was a hard fought match and Costinha and Deco were sent off in the match and so will miss the quarter final. Luis Figo will probably play despite head butting a Dutch player as he received a yellow card and FIFA said the incident has therefore been dealt with.
Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced in the match against Holland as he had a dead leg - he did not train the day before the match and so may not recover in time to play against England. Portugal's team could be Ricardo, Nuno Valente, Miguel, Carvalho, Meira, Sabrosa, Maniche, Figo, Petit, Ronaldo or Tiago, Pauleta
.
Gary Neville is recovering from injury and is likely to come back in at right back for the quarter final. The England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson is likely to keep the same 4-5-1 formation he played against Ecuador with either Owen Hargreaves or Michael Carrick in the holding midfield role. He could possibly also revert back to 4-4-2 with Peter Crouch up front with Wayne Rooney. The England team for the game could be:
Paul Robinson
David Beckham (Capt) Frank Lampard Owen
Hargreaves Steven Gerrard
Joe Cole Wayne Rooney
