England forward, Wayne Rooney has broken a bone in his right foot playing for Manchester United in the 3-0 loss away to Chelsea on 29 April 2006. The injury happened as Wayne Rooney was running down the left wing and was tackled by Paulo Ferreira in the 80th minute of the match.

The result ensured that Chelsea were premiership champions for 2005/06 but Rooney is now a doubt for the World Cup 2006. It is anticipated that he will be out of action for at least six weeks which coincides with England's first World Cup game against Paraguay.

On 30 April 2006 Manchester United issued a statement saying "Wayne Rooney has a fracture at the base of the fourth metatarsal on his right foot. He will be out for six weeks." (this is the longest bone in his toe next to the little toe)

10 June 2006 = 6 weeks after his injury (England's first World Cup game)
17 June 2006 = 7 weeks after his injury
24 June 2006 = 8 weeks after his injury (England's second round match if qualify)

Wayne Rooney also broke a bone in his right foot in the quarter final game of Euro 2004 against Portugal on 24 June 2004. He broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot back then. He returned to training on 13 September 2004 which was over 11 weeks later (but his latest injury is expected to heal quicker).

In 2002, David Beckham broke the second metatarsal bone in his left foot on 10 April 2002 and next played just over seven weeks later on 2 June 2002.

It is therefore unlikely that Wayne Rooney will take any part in the first two World Cup matches on 10 June 2006 against Paraguay and 15 June 2006 against Trinidad and Tobago. The final group match is against Sweden on 20 June 2006 and any second round match will be on either 24 June or 25 June.

On 2 May 2006 FIFA have said that England can wait until 9 June 2006 to replace Wayne Rooney. This is the day the tournament begins and the day before England's first game against Paraguay.

On 4 May 2006 the Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson, confirmed that Rooney had two breaks to the fourth metatarsal on his right foot. He said that the break he has got in fourth metatarsal the was a small fracture but the one slightly above it is nothing to worry about at all. He revealed that Rooney is using an oxygen chamber to try and recover quicker and that he will have another scan in a few weeks time.

On 13 May 2006 the England team doctor, Leif Sward, said that he had talked to the Manchester United club doctors looking after him and the report they gave him was "very, very positive". He has been cycling to keep fit.

On 17 May 2006 Wayne Rooney told the England coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson that he thinks he will be fit to play in the World Cup finals and hopefully play in the final group stage game against Sweden on 20 June 2006. His next scan is on 25 May 2006 and Eriksson said that "after May 25 we will know much better what's going to happen".

On 20 May 2006 it was reported that Wayne Rooney was well ahead of schedule in recovering from injury and he thinks he will fit for England's opening World Cup group game against Paraguay on 10 June 2006. Rooney is set to have his next scan on his injured foot on Thursday 25 May 2006.

On 26 May 2006 the results of Wayne Rooney's scan the previous day in Manchester were released. The news was not as good as was hoped as the scan revealed he cannot resume full training for another three weeks. His next scan is scheduled for 14 June and so he will certainly miss England's group games. Rooney will now meet up with the squad in Manchester on Sunday 28 May.

On 29 May 2006 it was decided to bring Rooney's next scan forward to 7 June 2006. Eriksson said that "it's important the scan will be done before I have to give the [final England team squad] list to FIFA on 9 June. After that I can't change it". The Manchester United statement said that "everything possible is being done to aid recovery of a fracture that involves a joint". The fact that a joint was involved means that this injury may take longer to heal than was previously thought.

On 2 June 2006, Rooney was seen running at the England training camp and Eriksson said  "we have to wait until 7 June when he has the scan. I look forward to that but from tomorrow he will practice with us, with our physios"

On 5 June 2006, Rooney stepped up his training and was seen kicking the ball in training. Reserve player Jermain Defoe travelled with the squad to Germany as cover for Wayne Rooney - Rooney also travelled to Germany but will return to Manchester on 7 June 2006 for a scan on his injured foot.

On 7 June 2006, Wayne Rooney flew back from the England training camp in Baden-Baden, Germany to Manchester to have the latest scan on his foot in the presence of doctors from Manchester United and England. He then took a plane back to Germany that evening and after positive scan results Rooney is now certain to be in the England's final World Cup squad. Manchester United, who have been fairly cautious over Rooney's fitness to date said he has a "good chance" of being fit to play after the group stage is over.

On 8 June 2006, Eriksson said that Rooney is "injury free" and he will be able to play as soon as he is fit. He said he was doing this "in the best interests of Rooney, the England team and 40 million England fans". This suggests that Rooney may even be available for the last group game against Sweden.

On 14 June 2006, Eriksson said Rooney is now "match fit" but will not start the World Cup match against Trinidad and Tobago the next day. He said he had yet to decide whether Rooney will come on as substitute in that match or not. Rooney is set to have another medical examination on 15 June 2006.

On 15 June 2006 Rooney was passed fit to play after his medical examination and he came on as a substitute in England's 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.
