This friendly between England and Uruguay is to be played on 1 March 2006 at Liverpool's Anfield ground. This is a warm up game for England before the World Cup 2006 in June. Uruguay came fifth in the South American Group zone (behind Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Paraguay) and then lost the play off match against Australia on penalties so they will not be at the World Cup finals.

England have not beaten Uruguay since 1969 and the last result between the teams was a 0-0 draw on 29 March 1995. The team that day was Tim Flowers, Rob Jones, Graeme LeSaux (Steve McManaman 46), Tony Adams, Gary Pallister, Barry Venison, David Platt, John Barnes, Darren Anderton, Peter Beardsley (Nick Barmby 65), Teddy Sheringham (Andy Cole 70)

The squad selected on 25 Feburary 2006 for this game was:

Goalkeepers: Robinson, James, Green
Defenders: Terry, Ferdinand, G Neville, Carragher, Young, Bridge, Brown
Midfielders: Beckham (capt), Lampard, King, Gerrard, J Cole, S Wright-Phillips, Jenas, Carrick, Richardson
Attackers: Rooney, Crouch, Defoe, D Bent

Michael Owen (attacker with Newcastle Utd) is presently injured with a broken foot but should be playing again by April 2006. Sol Campbell (central defender with Arsenal) has lost form but also has an ankle injury and will probably not play again until mid March 2006. Kieron Dyer (midfielder) and Ashley Cole (left back) are also still injured at present. Jonathan Woodgate (central defender with Real Madrid) picked up a hamstring injury a week before this game and so has not been selected - although the England manager indicated he would have included him in the squad otherwise.

Frank Lampard had to withdraw from the squad through injury before the game.

The England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson is leaving the England manager position after the World Cup 2006 and has requested that his successor be named before the start of the finals in June 2006. The favourites at present to be the new England manager are Martin O'Neill (ex Celtic manager), Stuart Pearce (Man City manager), Sam Allardyce (Bolton manager), Alan Curbishley (Charlton manager), Paul Jewell (Wigan manager), Guus Hiddink (ex Holland and South Korea manager - presently Australia manager) and Steve McLaren (Middlesbro manager and part of current England set up).

England are currently second favourites to win the World Cup 2006 at 6/1 behind Brazil at 11/4. Argentina and Germany are joint third favourites at 7/1.
