Wales 1 ( Bellany 34 ) v Argentina 1 ( Cruz 61 ) World Cup football home page _________________________________________________________________________ This friendly between Wales and Argentina took place on Wednesday 13 February 2002 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The stadium had a closed roof on the evening, just like the the Sapporo Dome will have when England play Argentina in the World Cup on June 7, 2002. The Argentina team was: Saja Vivas Charmot Piacente Hussain Veron Sorin Riqueime Caniggia Cruz Gonzalez The Welsh team was Jones, Delaney, Page, Melville, Speed, Bellamy, Pembridge, Savage, Giggs, Davies, Hartson. Wales are not going to the World Cup 2002 but Argentina are the favourites to win it. They were expected to beat Wales even through Wales were playing at home. Argentina did not field their strongest side but Wales had Ryan Giggs in the side (a rare appearance for him in a friendly match). Argentina predictably began strongly and the Welsh goalkeeper dropped a cross from Sorin early on, only for Cruz to miss getting a goal. Claudio Hussain also put a good chance over the crossbar early in the first half. Welsh striker John Hartson was upsetting the Argentinians though - he had been playing a physical game with the Argentinian defence. In the 34th minute Wales scored - Ryan Giggs took a corner and Craig Bellamy jumped highest to head the ball into the net. Argentina were shocked and increasingly dominated the game and the the Wesh goalkeepers Jones and Crossley (who replaced him at half time) had several saves to make. Wales tackled well however and after an hour was gone the home crowd were still hoping for a Wales win. After 62 minutes, however, Argentina scored (just after Wales had substituted Giggs for Robinson) - Veron got the ball from Melville and pased to Cruz in space - being unmarked he shot well and scored to level the game at 1-1. Argentina were on top now and the Welsh team could only mount occassional counter attacks - they held out though for a memorable draw. The Wales team and crowd celebrated the draw but in truth they were a little lucky and Argentina will be tough opponents for England in June. |
