See below how England did in the more recent World Cup tournaments (England did not qualify for the finals in 1974, 1978 and 1994):                   

1966 held in England: England won the tournament: Click here for a full review

1970 held in Mexico: In group 3, England beat Romania 1 -0, then lost to Brazil 1-0 but qualified for the quarter finals by beating Czechoslovakia 1-0. In the quarter finals we lost to W Germany 3-2.

1982 held in Spain: In group 4, we beat France 3-1, beat Czechoslovakia 2-0 and then Kuwait 1-0 to qualify for the next group phase. In group B, the team drew against W Germany 0-0 and Spain 0-0 and did not progress any further. W Germany ended up runners up to Italy in the final.

1986 held in Mexico: In group F, England lost to Portugal 1-0, drew with Morocco 0-0 but then won 3-0 against Poland to qualify for the knockout stages. In the second round we beat Paraguay 3-0 but then lost 2-1 to Argentina in the quarter finals. Argentina then went on to become champions that year.

1990 held in Italy: Again in group F, England drew with the Republic of Ireland 1-1, drew with Holland 0-0 but beat Egypt 1-0 to qualify for the second round. We then beat Belgium 1-0,  Cameroon 3-2 in the quarter finals but then lost to the eventual tournament winners W Germany 4-3 on penalties in the semi final (1-1 after extra time).

1998 held in France: In group G, England beat Tunisia 2-0, lost to Romania 2-1 but beat Columbia 2-0 to qualify for the second round, where Argentina won 4-3 on penalties (2-2 after extra time).

2002 held in Japan and South Korea: In group F, England drew with Sweden 1-1, beat Argentina 1-0 and drew with Nigeria 0-0 to qualify for the second round, where Denmark were defeated 3-0. England then lost the quarter final 2-1 to the eventual winners, Brazil.
