Michael Owen picked up a bad knee injury in the opening minute in the
match
against Sweden on 20 June 2006 and will miss the rest of the World Cup 2006 - he
has ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligament and will be out of action for
several months.
Gary Neville picked up a slight hamstring strain in the 3-1 win over Hungary
on 30 May 2006 and so he missed the game against Jamaica on 3 June. He did play
90 minutes in England's first World Cup game but now has a calf injury
(picked up in training) and so did not play against Trinidad and Tobago.
He also missed the match against Sweden on 20 June 2006 and did not play in
England's second round match.He has now recovered from his calf injury
and played in the quarter final against Portugal.
Rio Ferdinand was substituted in the game with Sweden on 20 June 2006 with a
groin injury but scan results showed there is no problem. He therefore played in
the second round match with Ecuador.
Wayne Rooney had two fractures to a bone in his right foot after a tackle by Ferreira in Manchester United's
defeat by Chelsea on 29 April 2006. He has now recovered and came on as a
substitute in the game against Trinidad and Tobago on 15 June 2006 and started
in the final group game match with Sweden. Click here to
see the history on the Wayne Rooney injury. John Terry (ankle), Ashley Cole (thigh) and David Beckham
(ankle) picked up slight injuries playing against Jamaica on 3 June 2006 and did
not train on 5 June 2006 as a precaution - all three players recovered in time
to play against Paraguay on 10 June 2006 and Trindad and Tobago on 15 June 2006. Steven Gerrard missed the training session on 7 June 2006 with a stiff
back and only took part in the warm up on 8 June 2006. Just two days before the
game against Paraguay he rated his chances at only 50-50 but he played a full
part in training the next day and started in England's first World Cup match.

PLAYERS NOT SELECTED FOR THE WORLD CUP DUE TO INJURY
Ledley King fractured a bone in his foot playing for Tottenham against
Everton on 15 April 2006 and will take at least four weeks to recover. He therefore missed
the rest of the season for Tottenham and was not selected to go to the World
Cup.
Jonathan Woodgate has only played a few games with Real
Madrid because of sciatic pain linked to a succession of thigh injuries. He
could not therefore be involved in the World Cup 2006. Kieron Dyer has missed most of the season with hamstring problems and
will not be fit to play for Newcastle again until the 2006/2007 pre season. He
will therefore miss the World Cup 2006. Alan Smith will not recover in time for the World Cup after badly
breaking his leg trying to block a free kick in Manchester United's game away at
Liverpool in February 2006. Chris Kirkland missed the rest of the season after he broke his finger in
training in March 2006. He was on loan at West Bromwich Albion.
