England were the World Champions and at the start of the World Cup 1970 (held in Mexico) were very confident of winning the tournament again. England reached the quarter finals, where Germany got revenge for losing in the World Cup final of 1966 by winning 3-2 after extra time. For the first time in the World Cup finals substitutes were allowed and yellow and red cards were introduced.

Pele heads the ball towards goal                  Banks saves and the ball goes over the bar

In the game against Brazil, the England goalkeeper, Gordon Banks, made one of the greatest saves ever 10 minutes into the game. A cross from right winger Jairzinho was met by Pele at the far post who headed the ball hard and towards the bottom corner of the net - Banks had been guarding the near post when the cross came in but now had to dive low to his right to make the save at the far post. After 59 minutes, Brazil scored - from the left hand side, Tastoa passed to Pele in the penalty area who gave the ball to Jairzinho to his right - Jairzinho scored from close range to make it 1-0 to Brazil. Jeff Astle then had a shot for England from inside the box but put it just wide. Later on England pressed forward and Alan Ball had another couple of chances to equalise but Brazil held on for the win.

The England team against Czechoslovakia was Gordon Banks, Keith Newton, Terry Cooper, Alan Mullery, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore, Colin Bell, Bobby Charlton (Peter Osgood 65), Alan Clarke, Jeff Astle (Alan Ball 65), Martin Peters

In the quarter finals the results were:

England 2 (Mullery 31, Peters 49)-3 (Beckenbauer 68, Seeler 76, Muller 108) West Germany
                                                                        (after extra time)
USSR 0-1 Uruguay (after extra time)
Italy 4-1 Mexico
Brazil 4-2 Peru

The England team against Germany was Peter Bonetti, Keith Newton, Terry Cooper, Alan Mullery, Brian Labone, Bobby Moore, Lee Francis, Alan Ball, Bobby Charlton (Colin Bell 70), Jeff Astle, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters (Normal Hunter 81)

Gordon Banks                     Peter Bonetti

In the match against Germany, England were 2-0 up through goals from Alan Mullery in the first half and Martin Peters just after half time - England were still 2-0 up with just over 20 minutes to go but were tiring - could the match against Brazil in the heat of Guadalajara have taken something out of the team?

After 68 minutes Germany scored to bring the score back to 2-1 - Beckenbauer picked up a rebound and sent an average shot towards the corner of the England goal - the England goalkeeper, Peter Bonetti went down too late and the ball went under his dive. After 76 minutes Uwe Seeler equalised for Germany with a header over Bonetti who had come off his goal line. In extra time Geoff Hurst had a goal disallowed before Muller scored with a hard hit volley to win the match for Germany 3-2.

This was the best match of the quarter finals and the sweeper, Beckenbauer had a great game for Germany but England should not have let a two goal lead slip - Peter Bonetti had to play in goal as Gordon Banks was ill and England certainly missed the dependable Banks.

In the semi finals the results were:
Italy 4-3 West Germany (after extra time)
Brazil 3-1 Uruguay

In the third place playoff  West Germany beat Uruguay 1-0 while in the final itself Brazil beat Italy 4-1 with goals from Pele, Gerson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto (Boninsegna scored for Italy) - three of Brazil's goals were scored in extra time. Jairzinho became the first player to score in every World Cup match and this was one of the best Brazilian teams ever - it was also Pele's last World Cup match and his third World Cup winners medal. Pele is still widely regarded as the best football player of all time.

After their third World Cup championship victory, Brazil earned the right to keep the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy for good and a new World Cup trophy was designed for the next World Cup finals.
