The World Cup 1982 was held in Spain and England qualified for the finals for the first time since 1970 under the management of Ron Greenwood. In the first round of this competition there were 6 groups and the winners and runners up of each group went to the second round. The second round stage consisted of four groups of three teams - only the winners of these groups qualified for the semi finals - this format allowed England to go out of the World Cup without losing a game!

The England 22 man squad was Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton, Joe Corrigan, Mick Mills, Viv Anderson, Phil Neal, Terry Butcher, Phil Thomson, Steve Foster, Kenny Sansom, Graham Rix, Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins, Terry McDermott, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Coppell, Trevor Brooking, Trevor Francis, Paul Mariner,  Tony Woodcock, Peter Withe, Kevin Keegan

England were in Group 4 in the first round of the competition and the results were:

Group 4
England 3 (Robson 1,67 ; Mariner 83) France 1 (Soler 24)
Czechoslovakia 1 Kuwait 1
England 2 (Francis 62, Barmos own goal 66) Czechoslovakia 0
France 4 Kuwait 1
France 1 Czechoslovakia 1
England 1 (Francis 27) Kuwait 0

The final table was (2 points for a win):

Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
England 3 0 0 6 1 6
France 1 1 1 6 5 3
Czech's 0 2 1 2 4 2
Kuwait 0 1 2 2 6 1

Kevin Keegan suffered from injury during the tournament

Kevin Keegan was the first choice captain but injury kept him out of playing until he came on as a substitute later on in England's last game in the tournament against Spain - Mick Mills was therefore given the role as England captain.

The England team against France was Peter Shilton, Mick Mills (captain) , Kevin Sansom (Phil Neal 90), Phil Thomson, Terry Butcher,  Graham Rix, Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins, Steve Coppell, Trevor Francis, Paul Mariner

In the match against France, Bryan Robson scored after 27 seconds with one of the fastest World Cup goals ever. Steve Coppell took a long throw in, Terry Butcher headed it on and an unmarked Robson volleyed it in at the far post. Soler then replied for France after 24 minutes with a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area that went across Peter Shilton and in at the far post. After 67 minutes Robson got his second goal by beating the goalkeeper to a cross from Trevor Francis on the right and heading the ball into the net. Paul Mariner got England's third goal seven minutes from full time.

Butcher (on ground) heads the ball on to Robson to make it 1-0         Mariner gets England's third goal

France's captain, Michel Platini, was one of the greatest players of all time and the French team were especially strong in the 1982 World Cup. England's 3-1 victory over France was therefore very impressive - unfortunately by qualifying top of this group, England met a very good German team and the home country, Spain, in the next stage of the competition whilst France had an easier path by qualifying second!

The England team against Czechoslovakia was Peter Shilton, Mick Mills (captain), Kenny Sanson, Phil Thomson, Terry Butcher, Graham Rix, Bryan Robson (Glen Hoddle 46), Ray Wilkins, Steve Coppell, Trevor Francis, Paul Mariner

The England team against Kuwait was Peter Shilton, Mick Mills (captain), Phil Neal, Phil Thomson, Steve Foster, Graham Rix, Glenn Hoddle, Ray Wilkins, Steve Coppell, Trevor Francis, Paul Mariner

And the results of the other first round group tables were:

Group 1
Italy 0 Poland 0
Peru 0 Cameroon 0
Italy 1 Peru 1
Poland 0 Cameroon 0
Poland 5 Peru 1
Italy 1 Cameroon 1
Poland (4 points) and  Italy (3 points) qualified for the next stage. Cameroon also got 3 points but had scored less goals than Italy (they both had a goal difference of 0).

Group 2
Algeria 2 Germany 1
Austria 1 Chile 0
Germany 4 Chile 1
Austria 2 Algeria 0
Algeria 3 Chile 2
Germany 1 Austria 0
Germany (4 points) and Austria (4 points) qualified on goal difference ahead of Algeria (4 points) who did not.
The game between Germany and Austria was the last one to be played in this group and after Germany scored after 10 minutes there was very little goal mouth action in the game - it had been argued that both teams settled for this result as they would both then progress to the second round - whether that is correct or not, future World Cup's had the final group matches played at the same time to avoid future accusations like this being made.

Group 3
Belgium 1 Argentina 0
Hungary 10 El Salvador 1
Argentina 4 Hungary 1
Belgium 1 El Salvador 0
Belgium 1 Hungary 1
Argentina 2 El Salvador 0
Belgium (5 points) and Argentina (4 points) qualified

Group 5
Spain 0-1 Honduras 1
Yugoslavia 0-0 Northern Ireland
Spain 2 Yugoslavia 1
Northern Ireland 1 Honduras 1
Yugoslavia 1 Honduras 0
Northern Ireland 1 Spain 0
Northern Ireland (4 points) and Spain (3 points) qualified

Group 6
Brazil 2 USSR (Soviet Union) 1
Scotland 5 New Zealand 2
Brazil 4 Scotland 1
USSR 3 New Zealand 0
USSR 2 Scotland 2
Brazil 4 New Zealand 0
Brazil (6 points) and USSR (3 points) qualified. Scotland got 3 points too but went out on goal difference.

In the second round England were in group B with Germany and Spain and the results were:

Germany 0 England 0
Germany 2 Spain 1
Spain 0 England 0

The England team against Germany was Peter Shilton, Mick Mills (captain), Kevin Sansom, Phil Thomson, Terry Butcher,  Graham Rix , Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins, Steve Coppell, Trevor Francis (Tony Woodcock 77), Paul Mariner

The England team against Spain was Peter Shilton, Mick Mills (captain), Kevin Sansom, Phil Thomson, Terry Butcher,  Graham Rix (Trevor Brooking 65), Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins, Trevor Francis, Paul Mariner, Tony Woodcock (Kevin Keegan 64)

England's game with Spain was the last game in the group and before the game England could still have come top of the group although Spain were already out - England came close to scoring a number of times and one of the best chances was late on in the game when substitute Kevin Keegan missed with a header when he should have scored - the game ended 0-0 and England were out of the World Cup finals.

The final group table is shown below (2 points for a win):

Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Germany 1 1 0 2 1 3
England 0 2 0 0 0 2
Spain 0 1 1 1 2 1

Only the top team qualified for the semi finals and so England went out of the competition undefeated. In fact England were the only team in the competition not to have lost apart from Italy, the eventual World Cup winners. The format was changed for future World Cup's to make it unlikely for this to happen again.

The other second round results were:
Group A  Poland 3 Belgium 0; Belgium 0 USSR 1; Poland 0 USSR 0
Poland qualified top ahead of the USSR (Soviet Union) on goal difference
Group C  Italy 2 Argentina 1; Brazil 3 Argentina 1; Italy 3 Brazil 2
Italy qualified top as they won both their games
Group D  France 1 Austria 0; Austria 2 Northern Ireland 2; France 4 Northern Ireland 1
France qualified top as they won both their games

In the semi finals the results were:
Italy 2 Poland 0
Germany 3 France 3 (after extra time - Germany won 5-4 on penalties)

In the final Italy beat Germany 3-1 with goals from Paulo Rossi (57 minutes), Marco Tardelli (69 minutes) and Alessandro Altobelli (81 minutes) - Paul Breitner goal a late consolation goal for Germany in the 83rd minute.
