WORLD CUP 1986 World Cup football home page _________________________________________________________________________ England started badly in group 6 of the World Cup 1986 (held in Mexico) but managed to qualify for the second stage by beating Poland 3-0 with a hat-trick from Gary Lineker (on 8, 14 and 35 minutes). England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the quarter finals when Maradona scored one handball and one great goal. Gary Lineker did get the golden boot award however, by being top scorer (6 goals in the competition). The group 6 results and table is shown below: Group 6
* Morocco, England and Portugal qualified for the next round. The England team against Morocco was Peter Shilton, Gary M Stevens, Kevin Sansom, Terry Fenwick, Terry Butcher, Glen Hoddle, Bryan Robson (Captain, sub Steve Hodge), Ray Wilkins sent off on 42 mins, Chris Waddle (sub Peter Beardsley), Mark Hateley (sub Gary A Stevens), Gary Lineker
The England team against Poland was Peter Shilton (captain), Gary M Stevens, Kevin Sansom, Alvin Martin, Terry Butcher, Glen Hoddle, Steve Hodge, Peter Reid , Trevor Steven, Peter Beardsley (sub Waddle), Gary Lineker (sub K Dixon) After 8 minutes of the match against Poland, Gary Lineker got in front of his marker inside the six yard box to connect with a cross from Gary Stevens on the right wing and give England the lead. Lineker's second goal came five minutes later - Steve Hodge crossed from the left wing and Lineker put the ball into the net on the half volley. Lineker got his hat-trick after 35 minutes after a mistake by the Polish goalkeeper - from a Trevor Steven corner the ball went over just over the goalkeepers hands and fell to Lineker who gave England a 3-0 lead and a place in the second round. And the results of the other group tables were: Group 1
In the second round the results were: The England team against Paraguay was Peter Shilton (captain), Gary M Stevens, Kevin Sansom, Alvin Martin, Terry Butcher, Glen Hoddle, Steve Hodge, Peter Reid (sub Gary A Stevens), Trevor Steven, Peter Beardsley (sub Mark Hateley), Gary Lineker Against Paraguay, Gary Lineker's first goal was a tap in from two yards out after Steve Hodge had passed to him from the byline inside the penalty area. Ten minutes into the second half Terry Butcher's shot from the edge of the penalty area came off the goalkeeper and Peter Beardsley was first to react to score from close range. England's third goal was the best of the three - a clever pass from Glen Hoddle in midfield found Gary A Stevens running into the right hand side of the penalty area - he cut the ball across to an unmarked Gary Lineker who scored to the goalkeepers right. In the quarter finals the results were:
After 51 minutes of the match with Argentina, Steve Hodge tried to clear a ball to safety but mishit it up into the air - the England goalkeeper Peter Shilton went for the catch and would have got there first but Maradona led with his arm - he realised Shilton would get there first so kept his arm up on the jump and hit the ball into the net with it - in one of the worst decisions at the World Cup, the referee, Ali Bennaceur from Tunisia, gave the goal - Maradona would later say it had been scored by the "hand of god"! It was Ali Bennaceur's first and last World Cup game as a referee. After 54 minutes, Maradona scored again but this time with one of the World
Cup's great goals - he got the ball in his own half and ran past England player
after England player - inside the England penalty box Butcher tried to take him
down as he got past Shilton but he shot to make it 2-0 to Argentina - John
Barnes came on and after 80 minutes he crossed from the left wing to Lineker who scored
with a header to make it 2-1 - Lineker
had a good chance to make it 2-2 late on but could not convert it.
In the semi finals West Germany beat France 2-0 while Argentina beat Belgium 2-0. France beat Belgium 4-2 after extra time in the 3rd place play off and Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in the final. Brown (22 mins) and Valdano (55 mins) gave Argentina a 2-0 lead but Rummenigge (73 mins) and Voller (81 mins) pulled it back to 2-2, only for Burruchaga to score for Argentina after 83 minutes. The man of the tournament, Diego Maradona had a great game.
